Curriculum News
MathGeometry-Students learned the following shapes in kindergarten: circle, square, rectangle, hexagon, circle, cube,
sphere, rectangular prism, cone, and cylinder. In first grade we will expand upon that knowledge and distinguish between defining
attributes (e.g., triangles are closed and three-sided) versus non-defining attributes (e.g., color, orientation, overall size); build and
draw shapes to possess defining attributes. Students will also compose two-dimensional shapes (rectangles, squares, trapezoids,
triangles, half-circles, and quarter-circles) or three-dimensional shapes (cubes, right rectangular prisms, right circular cones, and
right circular cylinders) to create a composite shape.
Reading- Students will read non-fiction and learn to use text features. These text features include table of contents, headings,
picture captions, labels, glossary, index, and bold print words.
Writing Students will write How-To writings.
Science Students will learn about light and sound
