Essay of the meanings conveyed in 2 different

music videos
In this essay, I will be comparing Jar of Hearts By Christina Perri a
female dominated music video. The other music video, which I will
be analyzing, is If I Were a Boy by Beyonce, these two videos
contrast each other in many different ways.
Editing Techniques
In Beyoncs music video, it uses very little editing techniques in the
music video; this is because the message of this song is mainly
shown within the lyrics, although there arent many editing
techniques shown. They use cutting to the beat for most of their
transitions. In this Beyonc plays the role of a boy so this is a
change from her normal self. Whereas in the music video Jar of
Hearts, there are a number of editing techniques, they use effects
such as slow motion in order to match the beat of the song, this
helps the music video flow better.
Sound & Lyrical Interpretation
The sound & lyrical interpretation in If I Were a Boy, is mainly nondiegetic, this is because the lyrics are meant to have a very deep
meaning, and the message that she is getting across that the dayto-day life of a boy is easier than a womans life. Also within a
relationship it is easier as this is what is shown at the end when
Beyonc and her partner change back to their normal selves. There
is a short part at the end where there is no music and Beyonc and
her partner are just talking about their relationship. Comparing this
to Jar of Hearts, there is only non-diegetic this is because the lyrics
are strongly linked to the music video itself so they made the
viewers attention to the music video and the lyrics.
Mise-en-scene
The mise-en-scene in Beyoncs music video the location is the dayto-day life of a police officer so there are a number of different
locations, most of this is in black and white, this is to show the
audience that the part where Beyonce is playing the role of a boy
isnt real. Also, Beyonce is wearing the uniform that her partner
would normally wear to show that she is playing the role of a boy.
Whereas in the music video for Jar of Hearts is mostly in the
streets, with a lot of heart broken girls wearing wedding dresses
with black stains on, this portrays that they have been hurt.
Cinematography

Within this music video there are a lot of shots with Beyonce and
other male police officers, this is to show the message that Beyonce
doesnt think men treat women fairly, and its almost as if she is
flirting with the other officers. Also coming up towards the end of
the song, there are a lot of close ups to show the emotion that
Beyonce is feeling. Jar of Hearts uses a wide range of shots
throughout the music video such as a panning shot as she is telling
her story, there were also a lot of mid shots and wide shots so that
you can see all of Christina Perri and you can see her telling her
story.
Style/Narrative Structure
The style of If I Were a Boy music video is a narrative structure,
you can tell this by theyre being a clear beginning middle and end
during the video. The main message that she is trying to get across
is that men are generally more empowering than men in many
different ways. Comparing this to Christina Perris Jar of Hearts, this
is an interpretive music video as the girls all unite to say that men
cheating on women are a very bad thing. There are elements of
surrealism and narrative within the music video.
Conclusion
To conclude this document, there are many different elements that
contrast between Beyonce and Christina Perris song, for example
the mise-en-scene is almost the complete opposite as the women
are playing a heartbroken women whereas in Beyoncs music video
she is playing the role of a happy boy working as a police officer.
