Dear Editor,
I appreciated the article that you published yesterday in your newspaper about the phenomenon of brain
drain. So, I would like to shed light on the negative effects of this ongoing problem, some solutions, the
strategies that should be taken by the government and some pieces of advice to citizens.
Brain drain is a world phenomenon that has great negative impacts on countries, especially developing
ones. Some of these bad influences are as follows. First, the source countries lose huge numbers of high
quality manpower. Second, the government spends a lot of money on the education of highly skilled
people, but in the end they leave their countries. Third, there is a loss of health services; therefore, diseases
spread among people in society.
To solve the problem of brain drain, I would like to suggest some solutions. To start with, emigration can
be delayed. For example, doctors can be asked to stay in for two years after their training to pay back
what they owe to society. In addition, emigration can be inhibited in the source countries by developing
special privileges for those highly skilled people through paying incentives, enhancing research budgets
and laboratory as well as hospital subsidies.
Since brain drain is a very threatening phenomenon, the government must take so actions to combat this
problem. In brief, the government should build new universities so as to maintain scholars, researchers and
university teachers. It also should spend enough money on research and build laboratories with enough
developed equipment. To make it clear, the government must provide the favourable working environment
for its qualified people at all levels.
In the light of everything mentioned earlier, I advise my fellow-countrymen to stay in their country because
it is in need of their abilities and experience. I would tell them to show a high level of nationalism through
working for the development of their home country.
Yours sincerely,
Said El Mansouri
