SURVEY DESIGN

Survey as design – provides a quantitative or numeric description of the sample through the data
collection process of asking people

Survey as instrument – is a socially constructed apparatus with built- in limitations used in


measuring features of the world. The instrument is the survey used.

Basic types of Survey Design:


 Cross- Sectional
- study occurring in a single period of time

 Longitudinal
- the data for the study are collected at more than one point in time

Primary types of Longitudinal Design:


 Trend – similar data collected in different years is compared
 Cohort – cohorts or subjects are grouped by their ages for comparative purposes.
NOTE: cohort is a group of persons who were born in the same period
 Panel – measuring change by studying the same people over time
