ECX3232 CAT1 2011/2012 PAPER QUESTION (1) Guide Solution Question 1 A single-phase radial distributor is shown in Figure Q1.

The Power source feeds a 100 kVA, 14/2.4 kV transformer through a transmission line of impedance 40.0+j150.0 ohm. The transformers impedance referred to its low voltage side is 0.12+j0.5 ohm. The load on transformer is 90 kW at 0.80 PF lagging, and 2300 V.

a. Source voltage Vs. Refer transformer (t/f) impedance to 14 kV side. (Its given on 2.4 kV side) Now you can add transmission (tx) line impedance and transformer impedance to form a single impedance. Find t/f secondary current using the load P = VIsecondary*(p.f.) , P = 90kW , V=2300 V , p.f = 0.8

Find t/f primary current & voltage using t/f ratio Isecondary/ Iprimary = 14/2.4 Vsecondary/ Vprimary = 2.4/14 , Vsecondary = 2300 V

Find Vsource using Kirchoffs voltage law. Vsource = Vprimary + ( 40.0+j150.0 ) * Iprimary b. Power factor at the source. The cos value of angle between Iprimary & Vsource c. Voltage regulation of the distributor. Vreg = (Vsource - Vprimary)/ Vsource d. The overall Efficiency of the system. Power input of system = Iprimary * Vsource * p.fsource Power out put of system = 90kW Find efficiency using the above. Or you can calculate the I2R losses of the tx line and t/f and add that to the output power to get the input and calculate efficiency.
