News From Room 207

Week of 4/1/13

I hope you enjoyed the beautiful weather over the weekend. I was in West Hartford with my husbands family and we had a wonderful time outside. Your children did an incredible job last week persevering through three challenging days of MCAS. I was very proud of their efforts. Great job everyone. Our final MCAS (Math), will be on May 14-15th. I would like to send out a huge thank you to the Mrs. Chacharone and Mrs. Coughlin for sending in cases of water for the class. An informational packet is coming home later this week for our upcoming Wax Museum project. Your child will need to choose a person to do a biography project on. They will read a chapter book on the person and then write a speech to be performed at our Wax Museum on May 6th. Each student will need to bring in a chapter book on the person they choose by Friday, April 8th. A quick reminder that our States and Capitals quiz is on Thursday of this week and Reading Calendars for March on due on Monday. I am looking forward to a great week. Warmly, Sandra Travers

Read Aloud Mrs. Frisby is going to help put powder in the cats food this week. We will see if they are able to work together to move her home and save her son. Science We are in for an electrifying week!! Through a series of hands-on experiments, we have discovered that magnets attract and repel. We know a force is a push or pull and that magnetism is a specific kind of force. We discovered that a piece of iron becomes a temporary magnet when it touches a permanent magnet through the process of induced magnetism. This week, we will see if electricity travels from our power source (a D-cell) into our receiver (small light bulb) and back to the source by way of a circuit.

Math We will begin Unit 9 this week. Please check in with your child to be sure they have completed the study link as well as the assigned math boxes each night. Social Studies This week, your children will be part in the labor force as they make Model Ts in an assembly line and learn more about the importance of manufacturing and farming in the region. Our number is 13. Our States and Capitals quiz has been moved back a week to April 4th. English Language Arts We will be looking at using visualization as a tool to help us better understand what the author is sharing with us in poetry this week.
