Lunker lakers
As Tim Banakins shirt says, FISHING RULES: Bait your own hook, clean your own fsh,
and tell your own lies! Tim and Landon Ligon were in the process of flleting their lake
trout caught on a windy Sunday morning, the largest one in front of Landon tipping the
Berkley de-liar at 20 pounds. So theres defnitely some lunker lakers being caught along
with an occasional salmon. It should be picking up as summer coasts by.

While no formal
surveys are conducted for
huns in Montana, various
observations along with
weather and habitat
conditions suggest huns
will be average to below
average again this season.
Observations in Regions
4, 6, and 7 suggest average
numbers. Observations
from Region 5 suggest
numbers will be below
average and lower than
last year.
Pheasants
Montana is exper-
iencing a large decline
in CRP acreage along
the northern tier of the
state, which may have
an impact on hunting
experiences in Regions
4 and 6. In this area,
spring crow counts
where wildlife biologists
travel specific routes to
count and record the
crowing calls of cock
pheasants to determine
population trends
were 42 percent above
the long term average.
Region 7 reported that
populations will vary
between fair to near
the long-term average
in good habitat. In
2014 Montana
Upland Game
Bird Hunting
Forecast
northwestern Montana, weather in Region 1 resulted
in below average numbers on the Ninepipe Wildlife
Management Area. Region 3 reported average
numbers for southwestern Montana. In Region 5,
pheasant crow counts varied but were below the
long-term average. Overall, Region 5 expects the
2014 season will be similar to last years season.
Sage-Grouse
Statewide, male attendance at leks averaged 13.1
males/lek, which is 54% below long-term average and
down from 14.9 males per lek last year. Te continued
drop is likely a function of cool, wet conditions during
the brood-rearing season in 2013 which led to low brood
survival. Te drop in abundance was more apparent in
eastern Montana; abundance estimates in southwestern
Montana were stable but still below long-term average.
Consequently, hunters can expect numbers to be near
average to well below average in areas open to sage-
grouse hunting. Preliminary reports suggest nest and
brood success are excellent in 2014 which may mitigate
additional declines.
Sharp-tailed grouse
Region 6 reported fair to average numbers in good
habitat. Lek surveys and other observations in Region
6 indicate sharp-tail numbers will be near the long
term average across the region. General observations
from Region 5 suggest below average numbers. Region
7 reported that sharp-tail populations will be near the
long-term average where habitat conditions are good.
Mountain Grouse
Observations in western Montana suggest average
to slightly above average numbers of all species.
Preliminary information from Region 5 suggests overall
blue grouse and rufed grouse numbers will likely
remain below the long term average.
Chukar
Region 5 reports that chukar numbers remain below
average but may have some potential for improvement
this year.

It was an epic weekend for the frst Can-Am Fort
Peck Lake Laser Regatta.
Sailors were extremely happy with the conditions
on Fort Peck Lake for the race. Two of the sailors from
Canada are world class sailors.
Terry Reid and Savid Elliot are competing in the world
Laser event in France in October of this year.
David Elliot is a Grand Master Sailor and represents
the Calgary Yacht Club at 70 years of age.
Te youngest competitor was Caleb Gilliam from
the Lake Elmo Sailing Club in Billings. Caleb is 13 years
old.
Te goal of Fort Peck Lake Sailing is to get area
youth interested in sport. Te Laser sailboats are an
Olympic Class and sailed around the world.
This photo emphasizes how great it was to hold an
international event at Fort Peck. This was an awesome site
to see fying over the Regatta headquarters at the Fort Peck
Lake Marina!

A recent conversation with a friend
brought about one of those questions
that periodically shake the foundations of
Western civilization.
What does an ant taste like to a trout?
No, really.
We were talking about fy fshing for trout on the
Missouri River, and he was describing his use of trico
spinners.
Tricos, short for tricorythodes, are tiny mayfies
that hatch in midsummer. Tey tend to hatch and
emerge from the river in the morning, fy away, mate,
then fall back to the water. When they fall back to the
water they are called spinners.
If you know how to fy fsh a spinner trico imitation,
you can do really well. My friend does really well.
But afer the spinner fall ends each day, the
fshing gets tougher. So my friend said he switches to
ants. Because there are ants everywhere in nature, ant
imitations catch fsh.
Why? Whats so tasty about an ant?
Decades ago I asked a similar question to a
professional fy tier, concerning a Royal Coachman
fy pattern, which imitates nothing in nature and so is
called an attractor pattern.
His response? A Royal Coachman probably looks
like strawberry shortcake to a trout. In other words,
nobody knows. But it works.
Ants, however, are diferent. Tey are real. Tey
exist. And they contain formic acid. Ants, especially red
ones, produce formic acid to sting predators, capture
food and defend themselves. Tey have a poison gland
in their abdomen that contracts and releases the acid.
Formic acid, Im told, is bitter. Although one Internet
expert (yeah, let that sink in) says the formic acid in
ants makes them taste citrusy, like a lemon.
So does an ant taste like a bitter, or lemony, crunchy
morsel to a rainbow trout? Nobody knows, and the trout
Ive talked to, dont answer.
It is known that fsh taste things. Tey have taste
buds, which are commonly located inside and outside of
the mouth. Ours, of course, are restricted to the tongue.
Bottom fsh, like catfsh, have taste buds on their skin,
fns and barbels. Te barbels in particular allow the fsh
in murky water to taste food from a reasonable distance;
they dont actually have to touch it.
Tink of the advantages if we could do with that.
You would have the ability to wake up at 3
a.m. and from your bed taste the lefover
pizza in the refrigerator. Ten decide if you
wanted to get up and eat.
Wait. Tat could be lethal.
While rainbow trout presumably have
taste buds, too, they rely a lot on their vision
to locate food. Tis time of year, there are plenty of
terrestrials (bugs) about, fying, hopping, falling into
the water.
All a trout has to do is fnd a secure hiding spot
and watch for a tasty looking bug to hit the surface. If it
doesnt look like something that hooked them recently,
and they are not spooked by a telltale fshing line, they
probably will try to swallow it.
While an ant imitation would have no favor, a
trouts memory or instinct, I assume, would remind it
the last ant it ate tasted pretty good.
And if an ant is not available, then maybe that
grasshopper foating by will do.
I wonder what a grasshopper tastes like to a trout.
