MEMBAKUT berasal dari perkataan BAKUT yang membawa maksud KOTA

manakala perkataan MEM adalah kata perbuatan apabila digabungkan


MEMBAKUT bermaksud MEMBUAT KOTA.
Nama Membakut, asalnya nama sebuah kampung yang diduduki oleh suku kaum
Brunei yang terletak ditebing sungai kira kira 5 km dari pantai. Kini kampung
tersebut dinamakan Kg. Brunei manakala Membakut dijadikan nama pekan untuk
mengantikan nama asalnya BUA. Idea menukarkan nama Pekan dan kampung
tersebut dibuat oleh seorang Ketua Masyarakat iaitu Allahyarham OKK Hj. Saman
bin Md. Yaakub.
Daerah Kecil Membakut mula diakui sebagai Daerah Kecil Membakut pada tahun
1977 dan telah ditadbir oleh Penolong Pegawai Daerah yang pertama iaitu Encik
Ibrahim Hj. Ahmad.
Penduduk Daerah Kecil Membakut sangat padat dan dahulu meliputi 3 kawasan
ADUN iaitu kawasan Beaufort, Bongawan dan Kuala Penyu. Sekarang hanya satu
ADUN iaitu N.24 Membakut dan Parlimen P.176 Kimanis.
Daerah Kecil Membakut meliputi 38 buah kampung. Penduduk Daerah Kecil
Membakut tergolong daripada berbilang kaum iaitu kaum Brunei, Kadazan, Dusun,
Paitan, Jawa, Bisaya, dan lain lain. Dengan hasil utama bercucuk tanam seperti
menanam padi, nelayan, penoreh getah, kelapa sawit dan sebagainya.
Selain daripada itu , Daerah Kecil Membakut juga turut ditadbir oleh 2 orang Ketua
Daerah, 5 orang Ketua Anak Negeri serta 14 orang Wakil Ketua Anak Negeri dan di
peringkat kampung sebanyak 30 orang Ketua Kampung dan 35 orang pengerusi
JKKK dan 1 orang pengerusi JKDB yang dilantik oleh pihak kerajaan dan 2 orang
Ketua Masyarakat Cina.
Adalah difahamkan profail ringkas Daerah Kecil Membakut pada awalnya telah
diterokai pada tahun 1898 di mana Pekan ini pasa masa dahulu tertakluk di bawah
pentadbiran Kerajaan British North Borneo. Keluasan / topograpi Daerah Kecil
Membakut ialah 132.8 km (83 batu) persegi. Pertumbuhan penduduk pada awalnya
hanya kira kira 3000 orang. Penduduk tinggal di pesisiran pantai, bukit bukau
dan tebing tebing sungai. Dalam banci penduduk sehingga tahun 1990, penduduk
pekan ini telah bertambah kira kira 17,169 orang, kini penduduk Daerah Kecil
Membakut dianggarkan seramai hampir 21,900 orang.

was governed by the first Assistant District Officer, Mr Ibrahim Hj. Ahmad.
Small area population is very dense and first Membakut covers three areas of the state
assemblymen, Beaufort and Kuala Penyu Bongawan. Now only one assemblyman is
N.24 Membakut and Kimanis P.176 Parliament.
Membakut Sub-District includes 38 villages. Membakut Sub-District residents are from

and SJKC pei yin. I attended school in sk pekan Membakut from Primary 1 to Primary
Six and continue studies at SMK Membakut from Form 1 to Form 5. besides, there is
also a police post and a health clinic in the middle of town Membakut.

The people in my hometown live in peace and harmony. I love the peace and quiet of
my little hometown.
