Room 13- Class Procedures

Procedures are most effective when they are installed at the beginning of the year. There are
some standard procedures that need to be taught during the first few days of school since they
involve tasks or actions that students will be engaging in right from the first day at school. The
procedures that I will teach my students on the first day of school are listed and described
below:
i. When students first enter the classroom:
a) How to enter the classroom:
Students are expected to line up outside the front door the moment the AM bell rings. Students
will be required to show me 100%, which means that they should be standing in a straight line
without talking to one another. Once I give a nod to indicate my satisfaction, the students will
proceed to walk in quietly one at a time. I will stand at the entrance to the classroom and offer
them the option of receiving a high-five, fist bump or a handshake from me as they walk into
class. Students are expected to make eye contact with me when they greet me.
b) How to find ones seat:
During the first week of school, I will have a seating chart projected under the doc cam so that
the students can locate their seats easily. Students will be sitting at desk groups which consist
of four desks grouped together. The desks in each group will be arranged in a way so that the
students can see the board easily. The desks will also have nameplates with the students
names on them.
ii. Once students enter the classroom:
Students are expected to take out their homework planners and then put away their backpacks,
water bottles and lunches, if any, inside their assigned cubbies and hand their jacket up on the
assigned hooks against the wall by the cubbies. They must then quietly bring their homework
planners to their desks and open up their daily journals. They must then start working
independently on the prompt written on the board for fifteen minutes. There cannot be any
talking at this time. After fifteen minutes are up, I will call on students to share their writing with
the class. The students can either volunteer or are picked randomly by me by pulling out names
from a jar.
iii. Collecting completed work:
I will call on desk groups one at a time to get up and turn in their work into the white bin labelled
Completed by the teachers desk.

iv. Passing out work:

I will assign jobs to all the students on the first day of school. These jobs will rotate every week
in alphabetical order of students names. The jobs are- paper passer, messenger, teachers
helper, door monitor, and lights monitor. The paper passer for the week will be responsible for
handing out worksheets and other papers to all the students.
v. Good behavior:
I will reward good behavior with class dollars. I will monitor and document student behavior on
my clipboard at four different times during the day- from the beginning of school until the first
recess, from the first recess until lunch, from lunch until the second recess and from the second

recess until dismissal time. Students who followed class procedures and rules will be given a
dollar each for each of the four time slots at the end of the day.
vi. Bathroom Policy:
Students will be given five bathroom passes at the beginning of the week. Students are
expected to use the bathroom during recess and lunch only and before coming to class in the
morning. If they need to use the bathroom during instruction time, then they will have to turn in
one of the bathroom passes to me. If they need to use the bathroom during class instruction
time and have used up all their passes, then they have to turn in a class dollar.
vii. Getting a drink of water: Students are allowed to get a drink of water only during
transitions, after P.E and after recess. I will set a timer for 3 minutes during these times. They do
not need to ask me permission to drink water as long as they are in their seats before the 3minute timer goes off.
viii. Using hand signals:
I will teach, model and make the students practice the following hand signals from the first day
of school:
Asking a question or providing an answer: Vertical hand signal- arm held straight up
with all fingers pointing up.
Using the bathroom: Hand held up with middle finger crossed over the forefinger
Sharpening Pencils: Students will raise one finger to indicate that they need to sharpen
their pencil.
Getting students attention: I will use the clapping signal Clap-clap-clap clap clap to
get the students attention. When students hear the signal, they will drop whatever they
are doing, repeat the clapping signal after me and focus their attention on me at the
same time.
ix. Moving around the classroom:
Students are not allowed to get up from their seats except on my cue. If the student has to get
out of his seat for any reason, then he is required to ask my permission by using the vertical
hand signal which is used for asking questions.
x. Lining up:
When I tell students to line up to go to the library or lunch, they will be required to line up in ABC
(alphabetical) order, one behind the other, in front of the classroom door, and wait for me to walk
them out. While lining up to go for recess or P.E, I will let call on one desk group at a time, in the
order in which they show me that they are ready.
xi. Dismissal at the end of the day or before recess and lunch:
I will dismiss the students and not the bell. I will dismiss one group at a time to go collect their
belongings from the cubbies and bring them back to their tables. They will be required to clean
up around their desks, picking up anything that may have fallen on the floor. The teachers
helper will pass out wipes to all the students so that they can wipe their desks clean. Once I
have determined that the classroom looks clean, I will dismiss the students to line up at the
entrance of the classroom, one group at a time, and then I will walk the students out to the
entrance of the school.
