Contraception

William Park - OL73

What is contraception?
Contraception, also known as birth control, is the use of a
method/device to prevent unwanted pregnancies and/or sexually
transmitted infections (STIs).
There are many different kinds of contraceptive methods, all of which
have a different effectiveness depending on the person. The most
effective method of contraception, however, is abstinence (not having
any type of sex whatsoever).

Condoms
Condoms are made out of latex or plastic
and are usually worn by men (although
women can also wear condoms). They are
a very commonly used contraceptive
because they are easy, cheap, and
effective.
They can be used for vaginal, anal, or oral
sex. There are even flavoured condoms!

Birth Control Pills

The birth control pill (also referred

to as the pill) is a pill that is
meant to be taken daily. The pill
contains hormones that when
consumed, change how the body
works and prevents the woman
from becoming pregnant.
This is a popular form of
contraception for women because
it is safe and effective.

Natural
There are several non-hormonal/natural contraceptive methods. One of
these methods is breastfeeding, or lactational amenorrhoea method (LAM).
Lactational amenorrhoea method works by delaying ovulation, which means
that the women cannot become pregnant. However, this method is not foolproof and it can be difficult to determine exactly when ovulation begins.

Withdrawal
Withdrawal or coitus interruptus,
commonly called pulling out, is a very
risky method. This is another form of
non-hormonal contraception.
It is done during vaginal sex and it is the
act of pulling the penis out of the vagina
before ejaculation occurs. This can be
risky because one may not be able to
fully pull out on time.
