Ch(1) Wave motion

To understand the wave motion and the physics of waves we should first study the
vibrational motion and its concepts
When an object as the simple pendulum vibrates at the two sides of its rest position it is called a vibrating
object , also its type of motion is called the vibrational motion
Vibrational motion
it is the motion of the vibrating object at the two sides of its rest position

Examples of some vibrating object

displacement

Frequency

amplitude

vibrational
motion

priodic time

compluete
oscillation

Displacement it is the distance between the rest position and the position of the vibrating object at any at
any instant of time.
The displacement is measured in meter or centimeters

The amplitude is the maximum displacement done by

the vibrating object away from its rest position

The amplitude is measured in centimeter or meter

What is meant by
1- Amplitude of a vibrating object = 10 cm ?
This means that the maximum displacement done by the vibrating object away from its
rest position = 10 cm.

Complete oscillation
it is the motion of the oscillating object in the time interval when it passes by a fixed
point on its path two successive times in the same direction .
Note : - 1 complete oscillation = 4 amplitudes

Periodic time: - it is the time taken by the vibrating object to make one complete oscillation.

T: - is the periodic time

t: - is the total time of all vibrations
n: - is the number of complete vibrations done by the object

Q what is meant by?

1-the periodic time of the vibrating object = 0.2 sec
This means that the time taken to make one complete oscillation = 0.2 sec
2- A vibrating object makes 100 complete vibrations in 10 seconds

10
This means that the periodic time of the vibrating object = =
=0.1 sec

100

Frequency :- it is the number of complete oscillations done by the vibrating object

in 1 second.
=

n: - is the number of complete oscillations

t: - is the total time of all vibrations
: - is the frequency of the vibrating object

What is meant by
1- The frequency of the vibrating object = 100 Hz
This means that the object makes 100 complete vibrations in 1 second .
Note the vibrational motion in its simplest forms is called simple harmonic motion
