5th Grade website :excelsiorlionsgohigh.weebly.com

This week, we are working on averages, line plots and coordinate graphs. Ask your student what
these different concepts are, and how they might be used in real-world application!

We will be finished reading The Narrative of Frederick Douglass, An American Slave this week
and students will begin on their final, in-class projects. Students will be able to bring materials
from home, and may choose to work independently or in groups. All Frederick Douglass
questions (complete, in order, and in the student Frederick Douglass folder) are due Monday,
March 20th. Projects will begin this week and will be presented before Spring Break. Check in
with your student this weekend to find out what they have chosen to do!

This week, we are beginning our study on The Civil War. We have spent a great deal learning about
Westward Expansion, Manifest Destiny, Native Americans and their conflicts with the settlers,
slavery (as an economic institution, and an unequal reality), and the initial building of The United
States as a nation. Ask your student about the factors that lead our nation toward the Civil War
and some of the difficult concepts/ laws/ and realities of life in a slave-state that our forefathers
wrestled with in this conflict.

We are studying ecosystems with a focus on conservation and extinction. Ask your student
what they know about these concepts and their ecosystem comic!

* Please see the homework calendar on the website for this weeks details.
* Students should be working for no longer than 40 minutes per subject, per night. If you or your student
reaches a frustration point OR you are unclear of what needs to be done for the work, please send us an email
so that we can help your student first thing the next morning.
* Homework is only excused with a parent note.
