Elk Horn
Newsletter of the Gardena Elks Lodge #1919 The Friendly Lodge

Aloha Members,
We have been one busy lodge! I hope that you have enjoyed all the activities so far.
Our weekly and monthly events have had a great showing. Our Installation of Officers was fantastic.
What a beautiful sight to see our lodge filled to the max that night. It is a testament to how fortunate and
unique we are, as a lodge that consistently has a great weekly member attendance at meetings and
participation at events. We had a lot of support from the other lodges, but our own member support was
amazing. Thank you !!The new Elks year brought visitation to the other lodges and thanks to all who
attended. We attended the combined district Inaugural Ball at Torrance lodge in April and enjoyed a nice
evening. Gardena had a nice showing of officers and members in attendance.
Our lodge placed 3rd in the Ritual Contest. Lecturing Knight Eric Koyanagi and Chaplain Leslie Mitchell
placed 2nd in their categories. As well, Inner Guard Harvey Beck and Loyal Knight Michele Homer
placed 3rd in their categories. Big thanks to all the officers, Ritual Coach John Sutton, Judy Sutton and
Bill Misner for all their help and I cannot forget Rick Gray. He jumped right in from Asst.Chapilain at
practices and became our candidate. Great job everyone.
Our weekly and monthly events continue to bring members to the lodge. The new First Friday of the
month $ 1 Tacos in The Jolly corks has been well received. Also new is the monthly Birthday celebration
in Jolly Corks, lets see if the interest level on a monthly Sunday afternoon in the Jolly corks grows
through June and July. The Cinco de Mayo Fundraiser with the Topics Band was a success, the lodge
was packed, and it's always a good time when the dance floor is full. Thanks to ALL who donated their
time, raffle items, set up, cleaned up and invited their friends.
The Youth Night with Scholarship recipients and Americanism Essay Contest Winners was a highlight of
the past two months. Scholarship Chairman Scott Nakashima and Americanism Chairman Ruthy
Almaraz did a wonderful job. It's by far one of those meetings that confirms why we work hard to raise
moneys and volunteer our time as an Elk. Everyone should be proud of your contributions and
investment into these young people's lives. Youth Activities Chairman Javier Reynoso put together a
great Youth Day Celebration, complete with BBQ, movie in the lodge, jumper for the kids, basketball,
Activities and a mechanical bull. Great turn out and thanks to his crew that helped make it a success.
Presently at writing, we still have our Mothers Day tribute & brunch and our CA-Hawaii Elks Association
Convention in Palm Springs. My ER pins are finally here. Please see me if you'd like one.
We are the friendly lodge, and I felt appropriate to have as my pin, an elk wearing a lei to symbolize the
ALOHA present within our members and collectively our lodge. The added flower with crystal behind the
ear symbolizes my personal commitment to you the members, to continue to not just do what is
expected or necessary but to go a bit beyond... give it an added touch... it's what is the difference and
continues to make our lodge unique and outstanding!
July we will be heading to Reno for Grand Lodge Convention. Our own PSVP Judy Sutton will be sworn
in as SCCD 's District Deputy Grand Exalted Ruler. When we return from convention, please join us for
her Testimonial Dinner and Jeweling Ceremony on July 29,2017.
I encourage you to join in the fun coming up in these summer months.

With much aloha and gratitude to all,

Alyssa Santos, PER
Exalted Ruler

To my fellow Elks,

If you haven't attended a state or national convention, you are missing out! Not only are they very
informative and give you an opportunity to meet other Elks from all over the state and country but they are a
great reminder of all the good work we do. So if you didn't make it to the CHEA State Convention last month
in Palm Springs, hopefully, you can join us for the Elks National Convention in Reno from July 16th-July
19th.

SAVE THE DATE Jolly Corks Initiation and Dinner Show - Saturday, JUNE 17, 2017 from 6:30pm-9:30pm.
Please join us for a fun-filled night of watching your officers and fellow Elks put on a show that you won't
forget! If you are interested in being a candidate, please contact me at (714)585-0897 or if you are
interested in joining us for the dinner & show, it is only a $12/donation per person before June 1st. You don't
want to miss this! :)

Also, check your calendar for all the other fun events we have planned in June & July. Remember it takes a
village to make our lodge successful. Hope to see you all at the lodge very soon! :)

Your Leading Knight,

Adrianne Castaneda

what you can accomplish until you try." -Michael Jordan

Hello Fellow Elks,

Summer is here, and many of you have trips planned and family gatherings to attend. There are also many
upcoming events scheduled at the lodge the perfect time to gather with your Elks family!
Our lodge hosted a Youth Day in May and many of our members kids and grandkids joined in on the
festivities. Thanks to Javier Reynoso for organizing a fun-filled day!
The lodge also celebrated all of the beautiful moms at our Mothers Day Brunch. After the ceremony honoring
our mothers, a wonderful brunch was served. If you werent able to attend, I hope you will be able to make
our Fathers Day Brunch in June.
th th
Our annual Flag Day Ceremony will be Wednesday, June 14 . Since 1907, the Elks have observed June 14
as Flag Day. We should continue to honor that allegiance to our flag that represents the wonderful country in
which we live.
Thank you to those of you who have supported our lodge by attending our events during the past few months.
I realize your lives are hectic, and I want to extend my appreciation and thanks that despite your busy
schedule, you choose to spend your free moments supporting the Elks. The success of our lodge and its
philanthropic endeavors are entirely based on the efforts our members are willing to put forth. So again,
thank you.
Alone we can do so little, together we can do so much. -Helen Keller
Have a wonderful summer!
Respectfully Yours,
Michele Homer, Loyal Knight

To My Gardena Elks Ohana,

These past few months have been an enjoyable one and the more I familiarize myself with what it takes to
be an officer within our beautiful lodge the more I can see how all our lodge members come together to
make this quite the successful and busy lodge that we have come accustom and love to be a part of.
Since we are the friendly lodge I have been noticing just how successful we have been these past few
months at extending our friendship and our family atmosphere towards our members, their families and the
community.
The impact that we make on each other and our community cannot be done without all our hard-working
members. All of our brotherly love seems to come to fruition when I see smiles, laughter and everyone
enjoying themselves while taking part in our numerous activities. When all is said and done Isnt that what
its really all about. A smile, a tear of joy or remembrance, a heartfelt thank you is the biggest pay-off there
is.
As we therefore have opportunity, let us do good unto others, for we pass this way but once
Aloha,

ENF and Major Project donations, community support and scholarships donations,
added to our membership numbers, supported each other and continued to have fun.
I appreciate everyone that made a difference and I know you will all continue to
support our current leadership to assure we will always be, The Friendly Lodge.
