In this recent field work, we performed taping on level ground and uneven ground. We
learned about taping on ground based on the procedure. Taping is common method in measuring
unknown distances similar with using the method of pacing. However, the only difference is that
we used steel tape which makes it more accurate than using our pacing as a basis for measuring
distances. Furthermore, accuracy of the measurement doesnt necessarily depend on what type
of method is to be used or process, perhaps it depends on your skills and proper techniques in
using such instruments.
Based on the data we have gathered, there are different possible errors in taping such as
the tape is not in its standard length, change in tension, change in temperature, correction due
to sag, and correction due to slope. These errors are typically normal and can be lessen by pulling
the tape tight enough so that the sag will be lessen. It is necessary to always check the alignment
of the tape, use the two range poles as a basis for straight path and plumb bobs to make sure
that the markings are properly designated. Also, the number of tape lengths should be counted
carefully and always check the apparatus especially the tape before using it. If the tape is
damaged or too short, apply the correction properly.
For our future profession, we can apply our knowledge in this course when we need to
measure distances for clients in building structures. Before making the foundations of the
buildings, the land must be consulted by a surveyor to know what exactly the boundaries are of
the property. Tapes are usually used to measure horizontal, vertical and slope distances. There
are different kinds of tapes that can be used and it also have various lengths. In using this method
there are many things that can affect its measurement such as sag, the slope, temperature, pull
and many more. But these can be corrected using some formulas discussed and we can also avoid
having these errors by properly using the apparatus, and by being proficient in measuring.
