It is an honor to serve as DeKalb’s chief executive officer
as well as former Superintendent of the DeKalb County
School District.

With 700,000 residents and an emphasis on collaboration,

DeKalb boasts the perfect complement of diversity and
unity. It is home to immigrants from more than 100
countries, speaking more than 100 languages.
 
DeKalb is synonymous with success. The county is home
to artists, athletes, architects and entrepreneurs; owners
of construction companies and auto dealerships; high-
tech and engineering firms. Blessed with a lush tree
canopy and wide green spaces, DeKalb is also home to
some of metro Atlanta’s most prestigious residential
communities and you’ll find some of the nation’s most
prominent houses of worship and revered spiritual leaders
here as well.
 
DeKalb is home to more than a half dozen great
educational institutions, including Emory and Oglethorpe
Universities. Our School District is a leader in STEM
curricula, and students can receive tailored education with
program options such as theme, magnet, international
baccalaureate and Montessori.
 
DeKalb houses many of the region’s leading medical
facilities and hospitals, including DeKalb Medical Center,
the renowned Children’s Hospital of Atlanta and, of

DeKalb is home to world-class bioscience and research
institutions, including the Centers for Disease Control. We are

dinosaur exhibit and IMAX screens at our Fernbank Museum of
Natural History and we are home to the largest farmer’s market

About The DeKalb
Chamber of Commerce
The DeKalb Chamber of Commerce is a
membership organization for businesses located in
or have an interest in DeKalb County. For 80 years,
DeKalb Chamber has worked to help businesses
succeed by working with local government to create
a pro-business environment; tapping into potential
customers for businesses; and providing access
and information to support, promote and sustain
business development in the county.

The DeKalb Chamber of Commerce is the catalyst
that attracts, supports and advances business
and economic development interests in DeKalb

residents. With a unique mix of
culture and extracurricular activities,
DeKalb is home to many new
amenities.
DeKalb was established from areas
of Henry County, Fayette County
and Gwinnett County. The county
has plenty to offer its residents and
visitors alike. From food, shopping,
walking trails and museums there is
plenty to do.
The county, named after Baron
Johann de Kalb who aided colonists
in a fight for independence, is nearly
270 square miles.
Decatur, Avondale Estates,
Brookhaven, Chamblee, Clarkston,
Doraville, Dunwoody, Lithonia, Pine
Lake, Stonecrest, Stone Mountain and
Tucker all call DeKalb County home,
including portions of unincorporated
Atlanta.

Stonecrest, DeKalb’s newest city,
has a population of an estimated
50,000 residents and is the fourth
city to incorporate in DeKalb in recent
years. Dunwoody formed in 2008,
Brookhaven in 2012 and Tucker in
2016.
DeKalb County has an excellent
transportation system with
interstates 285, 85 and 675 and is
home to DeKalb Peachtree Airport.
The county is also served by the
Metropolitan Atlanta Rapid Transit
Authority (MARTA) with rail and bus
services.
DeKalb has plenty of unique retail
shops and malls including Northlake
Mall, Perimeter Mall, Gallery at South
DeKalb Mall, the Mall at Stonecrest
and North DeKalb Mall featuring
stores such as Macy’s, Burlington
Coat Factory, Old Navy and many
others.
Dog owners may want to explore one
of DeKalb’s many walking trails and
dog parks. DeKalb is home to one of
Georgia’s most popular attractions,
Stone Mountain Park, located in
DeKalb County on 3,200 acres. The
park features a variety of family
activities and offers history, shopping,
hiking and a laser show at night.
DeKalb County also has a diverse
school system. The county’s school
system is one of the largest in the
state. The DeKalb County School
District is Georgia’s third largest
school system and serves nearly
102,000 students, 137 schools and
centers and 15,500 employees.
DeKalb also features a variety of
higher education institutions such
as Oglethorpe University, Georgia
Perimeter College, Mercer University-
Atlanta, Columbia Theological

This is
AVONDALE ESTATES
Avondale Estates is known for its historic single-family
homes and Tudor-Revival style business structures
along its Main Street.
However, the Westgate entrance of the city soon will
have a different look. A mixed-use development is being
constructed at Sams Crossing and East College Avenue.
The development, which will be built on 3.17 acres,
will feature approximately 8,000 square feet of retail/
restaurant space on the ground floor, approximately 197
residential units in four stories above, a gateway park—
which will preserve the mature trees, a rear parking deck,
additional on-street parking and sidewalks and street
trees to enhance the pedestrian experience.
The project is a part of the city’s efforts to redevelop its
central business district and the city. Although there will
be a new structure in the city, Avondale Estates will have
its small town, historic look and feel.
Founded in 1924 by George Francis Willis, the city is
modeled and named after Stratford-upon-Avon, United
Kingdom–the birthplace of William Shakespeare.
The Tudor-Revival style architecture of Avondale Estates
city hall and other buildings along the city’s main street
is like no other in DeKalb County. Many houses in the city

also have a Tudor style, leading the city to be featured in
This Old House online magazine as one of the “Best Old
House Neighborhoods 2012.”
The Avondale Estates Historic District is included in the
National Register of Historic Places.
Avondale Estates is also the home of the first Waffle
House restaurant, which was founded in 1955 by
residents Joe Rogers Sr. and Tom Forkner. In 2004,
Waffle House reacquired the original restaurant building
located at 2719 East College Ave. in Avondale Estates
and opened it as a museum. The museum features
the interior and décor of the 1955 Waffle House and
showcases Waffle House memorabilia.
Avondale Estates’ art district features the newly created
ArtLot. The ArtLot is an idea formed by the Avondale Arts
Alliance, residents and businesses to create a temporary
city park to showcase the talent of local artists.
The city also has thriving small businesses, thrift
stores, parks and a lake with a lake house where several
activities are held with a picture-perfect view of the lake.
The city is home to Avondale Elementary School, DeKalb
Elementary School of the Arts, DeKalb School of the Arts
and The Museum School of Avondale Estates.

The city of Avondale Estates was
founded by George Francis Willis
in 1924. His plans for the city were

BROOKHAVEN
2017 was the “Year of Progress” in
Brookhaven.
The city spent the year improving city parks
with new or upgraded playgrounds and open
fields. The city also purchased 33 acres of
greenspace near DeKalb-Peachtree Airport.
The property, located west of Clairmont Road
at the intersection with Tobey Road, contains
mature trees, a stream, wildlife and native
plants.
The city is also home to the future Children’s
Healthcare of Atlanta Center for Advanced
Pediatrics facility and the Hawks/Emory
Sports Medicine Complex.
Brookhaven has grown consistently with new
developments since incorporating in 2012.
The city was previously home to Creek
Indians. John L. Evins began a large
plantation in the area now known as
Brookhaven in the early 1800s, according
to the Historic Brookhaven Neighborhood
Association.
Around 1900, Atlantans began building
summer cottages in Brookhaven. In 1910,
a group of investors from the Mechanical
and Manufacturers Club purchased the land
making up the Brookhaven Country Club
property and lots immediately surrounding
it for a development called “Brookhaven
Estates.”
The Brookhaven Country Club was
incorporated in October of that year. In
January 1912, the Brookhaven Country Club
opened as Atlanta’s second golf course after
East Lake (1906).
Development continued when lots along
Club Drive and Stovall were offered for sale
by Samuel Stovall. By 1928, eight houses
had been built on these lots. Most homes
in Country Club Estates and on the Carleton
land were built during the Depression and
before 1942.
Brookhaven’s older homes include designs
by a number of well-known Atlanta architects
of this period.
In March of 1984, Brookhaven resident John
R. Brannen submitted a Historic District
Information Form on the neighborhood to the
Historic Preservation Section of the Georgia
Department of Natural Resources. Through
Brannen’s and his wife Bettie’s efforts, the
Historic Preservation Section filed for listing
Brookhaven in the U.S. National Register
of Historic Places in December 1985. The
National Park Service named the Brookhaven
Historic District on Jan. 14, 1986.
The city features single-family homes,
mixed-use developments, restaurants, shops,
parks and the Brookhaven Library.
The city also has a large international
community along Buford Highway and
Lynwood Park, which was historically an
African-American neighborhood.
Brookhaven is home to Oglethorpe University,
a private liberal arts college, Cross Keys
High School, the Marist School, and several
elementary schools.

Chamblee is a fast-growing city defined by
diversity, urbanity and internationality. Despite
the city’s proximity to the Buford Highway
corridor—made up of diverse international
restaurants and retail—continual commercial
development and closeness to Atlanta,
Chamblee offers a small-town feel with a city
skyline.
From its humble origins, Chamblee has
emerged as a unique urban suburb of
approximately 30,000 residents spanning
several neighborhoods.
Founded in 1908, Chamblee was originally a
small railroad community known as Roswell
Junction. The town was originally made up
of dairy farmers, railways leading to Atlanta
and a military operations site known as Camp
Gordon, which served 40,000 servicemen
throughout World War I and World War II.
The city soon transitioned into mostly
industrial property, an aesthetic that still can
be seen in Chamblee today. While the city’s
manufacturing and industrial jobs eventually
dwindled, refugees and immigrants took
advantage of Chamblee’s affordable housing
and proximity to Atlanta and repopulated the
city’s neighborhoods.
The trend of growth has yet to stop. In 2010,
the city annexed more than 5,000 residents
into its borders. In 2014, the city annexed
12,000 more.
Chamblee’s seven parks—Dresden,
Shallowford, Clairmont, Village, Keswick,
Huntley Hills and City Hall—play host to
a wide array of local events, including a
downtown concert series, food festival and
holiday celebrations. In 2017, Chamblee
purchased 25.4 acres of greenspace along
North Shallowford Road and Buford Highway,
representing a 33 percent increase in park
space within city limits.
The city also has began developing public
murals along its major intersections,
indicating Chamblee supports public art
projects.
The city’s Antique Row district offers prime
pickings for book lovers, collectors, furniture
enthusiasts and jewelers.
Chamblee is home to DeKalb-Peachtree
Airport, a county-owned public airport that
was established as an accompaniment
of Camp Gordon. Each fall, the city hosts
“Warbird Weekend,” an annual airshow
featuring modern and antique wartime
airplanes.
Six DeKalb County School District elementary
schools, two middle schools and two high
schools serve Chamblee neighborhoods. St.
Pius X, a private Catholic high school, is also
located in Chamblee, as well as The Elaine
Clark Center. Two libraries—DeKalb County’s
Chamblee branch and Embry Hills Library—
accommodate the city’s bookish residents.
Chamblee is home to Atlanta Chinatown, a
strip mall made up of Asian-American owned
businesses offering bakeries, restaurants,
cosmetics, bookstores, the World Journal’s
Atlanta office and more.

The City of Chamblee is a dynamic community. We are a mobility hub in

metro Atlanta with two of the most traveled arteries: I-285 and I-85. The
DeKalb-Peachtree Airport (PDK) is also located in Chamblee and is the
second busiest airport in Georgia averaging about 228,000 take-offs and
landings each year. The City is home to the Chamblee MARTA station as well
as a Norfolk Southern office.

In addition:
• The median household income is $46,300.
• More than 30% of the population make more than $75,000 per year.
• More than 36% of residents have a Bachelor’s degree or better.

CLARKSTON
Once referred to as the “Ellis Island of the
South,” Clarkston is also often referred to
as America’s most diverse square mile:
it’s been welcoming to refugees and
immigrants from more than 50 countries
for the past 35 years.
In the late 1990s, the United States’
Asylum program for refugees identified
Clarkston as an ideal place for refugee
resettlement. The city was identified
for its trend of relocating homegrown
residents, inexpensive housing options
and access to public transportation.
Before long, new residents from more
than 40 countries began calling Clarkston
home.
Today, Clarkston is a hub of immigrant-
owned businesses and city-dwellers
branching out of Atlanta. It’s not unusual
to pass a group of Clarkston High School
students hailing from Ethiopia, Somalia,
Eritrea, Viet Nam, Nepal, North Carolina or
a nearby DeKalb County suburb.
Clarkston was founded in 1882 as
a railway stop between Athens and
the eastern seaboard. It eventually

grew to be one of Atlanta’s first
suburban communities, with residents
often commuting to the big city for
employment.
Clarkston originally bore the nicknames
of “Goatsville” and “Angora Heights”
because of the large concentration of
goat farmers in the area. Angoras, goats
considered to be of high quality, were
prevalent in Clarkston and allowed to
roam freely.
Clarkston’s sole high school, Clarkston
High, has incorporated this history by
making the Angora its official mascot.
In addition to Clarkston High School,
two DeKalb County School District
elementary schools and one middle
school are located in Clarkston. The
city is also home to Georgia Piedmont
Technical College, Georgia State
University’s Clarkston Campus and
Atlanta Area School for the Deaf.
Clarkston is along the Stone Mountain
bike path linking Atlanta’s Centennial
Olympic Park to Stone Mountain park,
and for this reason, considers itself to
be a walking and biking community.
The city is home to Communicycle, a
community-founded program offering
bicycle education, repair and access on a
donation basis.
In addition to Communicycle, Clarkston’s
Community Center also offers youth,
senior, technology and healthy living
programs. It’s common for Clarkston
residents to engage in martial arts
on Monday, tai chi on Tuesday, uhuru
dancing on Wednesday and contra
dancing on Thursday.
Clarkston also offers Milam Park, which
features playground equipment, a walking
trail, a swimming complex, tennis courts,
nature preserve and a lake for fishing.
Clarkston’s Friendship Forest Park offers
15.7 acres worth of wildlife sanctuary and
walking paths for residents and visitors.

Named after Stephen Decatur, a
19th century U.S. Naval hero, DeKalb
County’s county seat was founded in
1822 at the intersection of two Native
American trails, the Sandtown and
the Shallowford—the Shallowford is
now known as Clairmont Road.

Historic neighborhoods, city parks,

Incorporated in 1871, Doraville has grown
from a small district of farmers, laborers,
blacksmiths and teachers into one of the
largest international districts in the metro
Atlanta area.
Considered a Buford Highway Corridor

and 20 percent “other.” City officials
estimate 56 percent of residents speak

Doraville is convenient for travel on
I-85, I-285, Buford Highway, Peachtree
Industrial and Shallowford Roads, making

Doraville is now in the cusp of many
developments, including redevelopment
of a former 165-acre General Motors
assembly plant. The site, now known as
Assembly, is expected to house mixed-use
housing, retail and office space, renewed
infrastructure, access to the city’s MARTA
station and more. According to developers,
the Assembly project is expected to bring
6,000 to 8,000 jobs to the Atlanta area.
Doraville is also cashing in on Atlanta’s
recent film boom with Assembly’s first
tenant, Third Rail Studios. The studio
boasts 140,000 square-feet and three
sound stages.
Nexus, a 13-acre redevelopment project
along Buford Highway, is also expected
to bring a hotel, townhomes, retail space,
multi-family and senior housing to
Doraville.
Doraville offers residents and visitors
serveral parks, including Autumn Park,
Brooks Park, Chicopee Park, English Oak
Park, Bernard Halpern Park and Flowers
Park, all offering such amenities as open
play areas, picnic areas, and playgrounds.
Flowers Park offers a pool for residents
May 28 through Labor Day.
Doraville residents also enjoy access to
Fleming Arena, offering basketball, tai
chi, qi gong, hip-hop dance classes and
aerobics. Other city programs include
football and cheerleading, soccer, boxing
and water aerobics.
Doraville boasts a large stock of
mid-century modern houses as part
of its Northwoods and Northcrest
neighborhoods, both of which have been
added to the National Register for Historic
Places. The neighborhoods were planned
by Georgia Tech graduate Ernest Mastin
as a planned, suburban neighborhood for
post-World War II industrial workers and
still remain in use.
Doraville is served by DeKalb County
School District’s Henderson Mill,
Evansdale, Pleasantdale, Oakcliff,
Hightower and Cary Reynolds elementary
schools as well as Sequoyah Middle
School, Chamblee Charter High School and
Cross Keys High School.
Tapestry Charter Middle School, Atlanta
Jewish Academy, Sophia Academy and
Northwoods Montessori School are also
located in Doraville.

to one of DeKalb County’s most populous
cities—Dunwoody.
Following unprecedented growth spurred by
neighboring areas of Atlanta and a three-year,
citizen-led movement, Dunwoody became an
official incorporated DeKalb County city in
December 2008.

and an active hospitality center situated at the

LITHONIA
Lithonia is a city filled with rich history.
The city of granite has maintained its
history through its historic buildings in
the Lithonia Historic District, which was
listed on the National Register of Historic
Places in October 2016. However, the city
is searching for a new look but one with the
same historic feel.
In comes a new development in the center
of the city—Granite Crossing.
Granite Crossing, a $14.7 million
development, is a 75-unit complex that
includes 24 one-bedroom units, 45 two-
bedroom units and six three-bedroom
apartments for residents with annual
incomes of up to $40,000.
The development includes a pool, gazebo,
computer room, community room and other
amenities. City officials said they hope the
new development attracts new residents to

Before Lithonia became a city, it was
originally a crossroads settlement that
served the trading needs of a community of
rural farmers. Lithonia then grew with the
development of the Georgia Railroad—now
CSX.
The rail line, which runs through the city,
connected Lithonia with Atlanta and
Augusta in 1845. In the late 19th century,
the line allowed Lithonia to prosper as
a center of the regional granite industry,

according to the Historic Preservation
Division. Lithonia gneiss, a rock which
the city is named for, played a role in
construction throughout the United States
since 1879. Lithonia gneiss is featured in
much of the city’s architecture.
Lithonia’s historic downtown is a mix of
commercial and residential development
representing common late-19th- to mid-
20th-century housing types and styles.
Main Street runs vertical to the Georgia/
CSX Railroad corridor.
Commercial buildings made of brick and
gneiss are in a two-block area along
Main Street from its intersection with the
railroad. Community landmark buildings
in the district include the Masonic Lodge
(1916), the Lithonia Woman’s Club (1928),
the Lithonia First United Methodist
Church—originally Lithonia M.E. Church
(1910), Antioch Baptist Church (1911), The
Union Missionary Church (1911), the Bruce
Street Elementary and High School (1955),
and “The Seminary” (1895), which was
individually listed in the National Register
in 1978.
Lithonia is home of the Collard Green
Cultural Festival, which is held every
September at the Lithonia City Park and
Amphitheater. The city also established its
own farmer’s market in 2016.
The city also features Lithonia Middle
School and Lithonia Davidson Library.

This is
PINE LAKE
As a city sporting a lake,
located within a forest and
having a population of fewer
than 800, it’s easy to see why
people migrate to and stay in
the city of Pine Lake.
Once considered a weekend
retreat for Atlanta city-
dwellers, Pine Lake was
established by the Pine Woods
Corporation in 1937. Lots in
Pine Lake originally sold for as
low as $69.
Weekenders eventually
began calling Pine Lake their
permanent home and began
convincing their friends to
move there as well. Today,
approximately 700 people
call Pine Lake their primary
residence. It was officially
incorporated as a DeKalb
County city in 2012.
Pine Lake is named after its
central feature, a lake made
from a widened portion of
Snapfinger Creek, which runs
through the city. The city was
originally part of a DeKalb
County farm and the valley
where the city sits was where
corn was grown.
Today, the lake is known as
the city’s meeting place and
center of activities. In 2014, the
lake served as a “living lab” for
students taking a permaculture
certification course in which
they researched, explored and
offered solutions to several
of the city’s environmental
concerns.
In 2017, Pine Lake began
examining nearby properties
for annexation—a process
that began as early as 2015.
City officials have held
several meetings discussing
annexation but none have yet
come to fruition.
The city is well known for
its laidback atmosphere,
consideration of the
environment, community
involvement and volunteerism.
The city is self-described
as a safe space for the
LGBTQ community and other
“straight-but-not-narrow”
people.
Pine Lake is home to many
artists who show their artwork
publicly via yard art, quirky
fence decoration and in-home
studios. The city’s lake house
classroom offers classes on
subjects such as environment,
sculpture and creative
dramatics during the summer.
Pine Lake’s LakeFest is known
for its showcase of local
talent, outdoor concerts and

Tucker, a well-established community for nearly
125 years, incorporated in 2016 and is continuously
growing.

The city has annexed several residential communities

and businesses within a year, and welcomed nearly
250 new businesses to the city. Some of the new
businesses are located in Tucker Meridian shopping
plaza, located at the intersection of LaVista Road and
Northlake Parkway near I-285.

The plaza features Sprouts Farmers Market, Dick’s

Sporting Goods, Hobby Lobby, DSW and Ross Dress for
Less.

The city also opened a city hall annex and meeting

space on First Avenue. The city renovated the old
building to turn it into a space for city council meetings
and other city meetings. Henderson Park tennis courts
were also renovated.

The Tucker community was established in 1892.

Georgia, Carolina and Northern built a railroad through
the center of what is now called Tucker in 1892. The
Tucker area had been known as Browning’s District
until 1907 when the Seaboard Line Railway acquired
the railroad and surveyed the unincorporated town and
named the town after an officer of the company, Capt.
Tucker.

Tucker, with a strong community support, grew into

a desirable location and mix of residential, office,
commercial and industrial properties, along with parks
and green space.

Today, the city’s mayor and council are using an

advanced public-private partnership to deliver services
to Tucker’s 35,000 residents and business owners.

Main Street is always busy with activities due in part

to the work of Tucker’s Main Street Alliance. There are
annual events, such as Tucker Day, Christmas on Main
Street, the Tucker Chili Cook-off and more.

Main Street also hosts the city’s weekly farmers market.

This is
STONECREST
Stonecrest, the newest and largest city per
capita in DeKalb County, has made a name
for themselves in a short time.
The city officially formed Nov. 8 of
2016 when DeKalb voters approved to
incorporate Stonecrest. Stonecrest serves
roughly 50,000 residents.
Called by some as the “founding father”
of Stonecrest, Mayor Jason Lary said he
had a vision of Stonecrest being a place
residents can “live, work, play, worship,
shop and pursue education.”
With Stonecrest being home to a 1.2
million-square-foot-mall, nature preserves
and a potential $200 million sports
complex, there’s plenty of activities for
residents to indulge in.
The mall at Stonecrest is a two-level
shopping center located in the heart of city.
The mall is surrounded by a community
which features residential homes, a movie
theater, hotels and restaurants.
Coming soon to the center, located across
from the AMC Theater, will be a $200
million sports complex called Atlanta
Sports City.

The project is expected to bring 1,937
jobs to the area along with 300 new
construction jobs to Stonecrest. Developer
Vaughn Irons said at least 25 percent of
those jobs will go to Stonecrest residents.
Developers working on the project said
Atlanta Sports City could support 3 million
annual visitors and bring in $105 million to
DeKalb County.
Stonecrest also features the Davidson-
Arabia Mountain Nature Preserve.
The preserve also includes other large
formations of exposed granite, wetlands,
pine and oak forests, multiple streams and
two lakes.
Arabia Mountain High School is also one
of the top schools in the area and provides
students with an environmental, energy
and engineering magnet program for
grades 9-12.
“I’m continuing the people’s vision. I didn’t
do this alone. We spent years finding out
what would be successful for us and I’m
going to continue the vision of the people,”
Lary said.

Stone Mountain sees thousands of tourists come through the
city to visit Stone Mountain Park.

Before tourists visit the park, they can soon visit the Stone
Mountain Depot Welcome Center and Village Museum. The
center is located on Main Street in the old Train Depot. The
city is in the process of transforming the depot into the city’s
new visitors’ center as part of a renovation project. The depot
will also be used as a senior activity center, event venue and
museum featuring local exhibits.

The Train Depot has an extensive history in Stone Mountain.

The south side of the train depot was built in 1857 after the
Georgia Railroad Company completed the line from Madison
to Atlanta. The north side was built in 1914 as a passenger
office and waiting room. In the early 1960s, the train depot
served as the city hall and city jail. It remained in use until 2012
when the new municipal building was completed.

The Train Depot has been a landmark in Stone Mountain

Village, which was established in the early 1980s. The area that
now makes up the city of Stone Mountain was incorporated
into the newly formed DeKalb County in 1822. A post
office was created in 1834, a hotel was built in 1836 and an
observation tower was built at the summit of the mountain.
