LEARNING By the end of the lesson, pupils will be able to understand the usage of modal verbs by presenting a

1. Pupils brainstorm the words related to ‘party’.
2. Pupils state to the whole class the activities they can/could/should do at a party.

II. Activity 1
1. Pupils work in groups of 4 members and given Handout 1- containing a short dialogue.
2. In groups, pupils take turns to role play the dialogue using the modals highlighted.
3. In random pupils are called to present to the whole class.
III. Activity 2

i. Pupils are given Handout 2a.
ii. In groups, pupils discuss and suggest items they need for a class party within the
given budget (RM100)
iii. Pupils are encouraged to use the modals presented earlier.
High :
i. Pupils are given Handout 2b.
ii. In groups, pupils discuss and suggest items they need for a class party within the
given budget (RM100)
iii. Pupils are encouraged to use the modals presented earlier.

2. Every group presents their ideas to the whole class

Anne : Hi friends. Next week is Sarah’s Birthday. How about planning a surprise
birthday party for her?
Jason & May : That’ll be great.
Raju : Why don’t we buy some delicious food and drinks?
Jason : Yes. That’s a good idea.
May : Could we have games too?
Anne : Sure. Why not! That will be fun.
Raju : I have a suggestion. We can buy Pizza from Dominoes. The set menu is much
cheaper. It comes with drinks.
Anne : What about getting a gift for her?
May : We could get a photo album.
Jason : I’m not sure about that because she probably has enough.
May : In that case let’s get her a personalised mug.
Jason : I agree. It’s an excellent idea. We should go for it if everyone agrees.
May, Anne, Raju : We agree.
