Purpose

To describe and control the process of backfilling work with quarry muck for the excavated canal
which was having the bottom of very lower level.

Scope

The procedure applying to quarry muck for the back filling because of the soil unavailability.

Top most 300mm layer shall be placed by using the soil and do the proper compaction.

Responsibility

The project engineer has overall responsibility for the implementation of this project procedure

Back Filling Execution

1. Total depth of the back fill shall be identified if it up to 2m or deeper


2. Backfill will be executed in layers and the thickness of the layer is subject to the back-filling
depth. Layers shall be maximum 300mm in height for the back fill deeper than 2m and shall
be maximum 250mm in height for the back fill less than 2m,
3. A steel rod shall be driven into the ground if possible to indicate the level of the layers paint
mark could be used in shuttering or concrete sides if any to indicate the layer level as well.
4. Distance between rods should be 2m to 3m.
5. From time to time survey crew will check the levels and marks on them.
6. Backfill material shall be stocked in pile and the appropriate water quantity will be added by
checking the compaction.
7. Quarry muck will be mixed well to make sure that moisture content is uniform.
8. Quarry muck must be spread in layers in accordance to the layer thickness indicated. Each
layer shall be compacted by vibrating roller (two Tons)
9. Top most 300mm layer will be done by using approved imported soil and compacted by
using the vibrator roller.
10. Maximum compaction will be assured by running more no of passes of roller.

Back Filling Inspection

1. Quarry muck pile shall be inspected by the client’s representative


2. Frequent inspection from client’s representative
3. Level of compaction shall be monitored by the client’s representative
4. Moisture level can be maintained by getting approval from the client’s representative by
doing the physical inspection.

Accident Preventive Safety Procedure

1. Pre-qualification of all equipment prior to the start of work


2. All personnel will be site trained
3. Method statement shall be discussed with all concerned
4. Dust control shall be considered
5. Regular safety tool box meeting.

Records

Inspection records generated by this procedure are to be managed in accordance with the
project procedures

Records of monitoring, analysis and improvement shall be maintained on site throughout the
contract.
