Reading for Yom Kippur
Note that this reading is based on the traditional Karaite Jewish Yom Kippur liturgy.
These verses are about how the righteous, the upright and the blameless will be
purified on Yom Kippur. In the traditional reading, after every section on these
individuals, there is a contrasting section on what happens to the wicked. The
selection below comes from the Israeli Karaite community’s songbook for the month
of Tishrei.

For on this day shall atonement be made for you, to cleanse you; from all your sins

O people of heart,1 remember your judgment day,

And the day of repaying of your deeds.
Remember – it is today!
For on this day shall atonement be made for you, to cleanse you; from all your

The day when the righteous will multiply,

The day when the upright will be fecund like fish,
The day when those blameless in their way will attain life.

The day when the righteous will be clothed in rescue,

The day when the upright will perform much shouting,2
The day when those blameless in their way will attain life.

The day when those blameless in their way will stand up to give thanksgiving,3

Render beauty unto your Creator, remember your Supporter!
He knows the kidneys and examines hearts,6
To give each person [compensation] in accordance with their ways and the fruit of
their deeds.
