CARPETING
1. GENERAL
1.1 Contract Documents
1.1.1 All work of this Section shall comply with the requirements of the Contract
Documents for the Main Building Work, with the Drawings, Schedules and with all
other Contract Documents.
1.2 Work Included
1.2.1 Prime Cost rates for supply of carpets and carpet tiles, have been allowed in the
Bills of Quantities.
1.2.2 Supply carpets in accordance with the Appendices enclosed to locations as
identified in the finishes schedule.
1.2.3 Furnish all labour, materials, equipment and services to furnish, deliver and install
complete, the carpeting and related work, as shown on the drawings and as herein
specified, including, but not limited to the following :
a) Furnish and install carpet tiles on floors of all areas indicated on Drawings
with colour and patterns as shown.
b) Furnish and install roll carpet and underlay, in yard goods form with colour
and pattern as shown on Drawings.
1.2.4 Preparation of surfaces to receive carpeting.
1.2.5 Submission of shop drawings and samples, including tests.
1.2.6 Cleaning and protection.

1.4 Quality Assurance
1.4.1 Installer's Qualifications - Minimum 5 years experience in installing carpeting on
comparable projects.
1.4.2 Regulatory Requirements
a) Carpeting materials to be furnished for the work of this Section shall
comply with all regulations and requirements of the Building Code.
Submit certification of compliance for Architect's review.
b) Submit test data (and/or manufacturer's certification) from approved
testing laboratory, of test results of surface burning characteristics (flame,
fuel and smoke) of carpeting, tested per ASTM E84-70 or UL-992
Chamber Test, Dimensional Stability (Aachen Method) test data and
Static Control Test Reports (a) AATCC 134-75 and (b) OHM Resistance,
and Fuzzing and Piling Test by DuPont Random Tumbler - Severe
Method.

1.4.3 Job Conditions
a) Areas to receive carpeting shall be field measured. It shall be the
responsibility of the Contractor to provide a complete carpet installation
for areas shown on Drawings or scheduled to receive carpet.
b) Do not install carpet until condition of surfaces to receive carpet are
satisfactory and in compliance with carpet manufacturer's
recommendations. Install carpet in areas which are well ventilated and
well illuminated. Maintain temperature at 16oC for 24-hours before,
during, and for 24-hours after installation. Protect adjacent surfaces from
adhesive and soiling resulting from carpet installation.
1.4.4 Standard Documents
Refer to Section 01 42 19 Reference Standareds to comply with the requirements
of the referenced standards
1.5 Submittals
1.5.1 Shop Drawings:
a) Submit Shop Drawings for Architect's review indicating schedule of areas
to receive each type of carpeting. Indicate on Drawings how broadloom
carpet and carpet tiles will be laid in each area and showing location of
carpet seams, directional pattern of carpeting, edge and trim strips,
details, access panel locations and methods of installation.
b) Show on Drawings the coordination and location of each dye lot area.
1.5.2 Samples:
a) Carpet Samples:
Submit at least three (3) samples of each carpet tile type for Architect's
approval of Carpet Tiles and three (3) 1m x 1m pieces of each type of
carpet, showing full range of colour, texture and pattern.
b) Seaming Samples:
Submit 300mm x 600mm samples of all seaming conditions for each
carpet type and underlay.
c) Accessories:
Submit for each type and finish; including edge and trim strips.
1.5.3 Certification and Test Results:
a) Submit manufacturer's certification and test results for Architect's
approval, at the time of submitting Shop Drawings and carpet samples,
that all carpeting and underlay materials shall meet or exceed the
minimum flame spread classification determined by test to meet the Local
Authorities' requirements.
b) Submit for colour fastness of each carpet type.
1.5.4 Manufacturer's Literature
a) Submit for Architect's review technical information and installation
recommendations for underlay, adhesives, carpet, and all other materials
to be used for the installation of the carpeting.
b) Submit for the Employer's use three (3) bound copies of cleaning and
maintenance instructions for carpeting.

2. PRODUCTS
2.1 Materials
2.1.1 General Description
a) Colour and Design - Provide carpet and carpet tiles, to design patterns
indicated on drawings. Should more than one dye-lot be required to
complete production run, samples of each dye lot shall be submitted for
Architect's review.

d) Static Protection - Carpet to generate less than 2.0 Kv at 21 C, 20% RH
through special metal fibres woven into the carpet as part of the yarn.
e) Fire Hazard Classification - In accordance with Article 1.4, and Article 1.5,
herein.
2.1.2 The Contractor shall supply all materials, including those specified herein,
required to properly install the carpet tiles and carpet per manufacturer's
instructions.
2.1.3 Adhesives - Use non-flammable carpet adhesive, as recommended by
manufacturer.

2.1.4 Edge Strips (for Carpet Tiles) - Shall be "reducer" type where butting against other
materials or floor levels, or as otherwise shown on Drawings. Materials shall be
adhered to floor per manufacturer's recommendations.
2.1.5 Submit samples of all installation materials required to accomplish installation for
Architect's review.
2.2 Delivery, Storage and Handling
2.2.1 Delivery of carpeting shall be made in accordance with installation schedule.
2.2.2 Storage of all carpeting materials at the Site shall be in clean, dry, and well
ventilated areas designated by the Architect, kept under lock and key.
2.2.3 Carpet shall be stored in the manufacturer's original wrappings and packages shall
be intact, clearly labelled, showing name of the manufacturer, brand name, dye
lot, size and related information. Each roll shall have the registered number
attached or stencilled, on the bale and intact.
2.2.4 All carpeting materials shall be carefully protected from damage and soiling during
delivery and storage:
a) Carpet rolls shall be stored horizontally, not standing on end.
b) Upon delivery and prior to installation, examine all carpeting materials.
c) Carpeting materials which in the opinion of the Architect are damaged or
soiled, will be rejected and shall be promptly removed from the site and
be replaced with new, perfect material, at no additional cost to the
Employer.
2.2.5 All carpet, when delivered to the job site shall have dye lot and register number
tags attached and intact. Deliver a copy of tags to the Architect; with a sample of
each carpet cut from the bale.
2.3 Salvage
2.3.1 All unused pieces of carpet or carpet tiles shall be saved and turned over to the
Employer at completion of work for future repair work. Salvaged carpet tiles shall
be placed in delivery cartons, carpet shall be rolled and wrapped in protective non-
staining paper, tagged for identification and stored where directed by the
Employer.
2.4 Spare Stock
2.4.1 For carpet and carpet tiles - Prior to the issue of the Final Completion Certificate
by the Architect, deliver to the Employer spare stock in the amount of 20m2 of the
quantity installed for each carpet type.
2.4.2 The Carpet spare stock will be stored in manufacturer's cartons, fully labelled, in
an area designated by the Employer.
3. EXECUTION
3.1 Preparation
3.1.1 Surfaces that are indicated to receive carpeting shall be sound, level, clean, dry
and non-slippery, free of holes and cracks, depressions, ridges, oil, grease, wax,
dust, dirt, concrete curing compounds or other deleterious substances. Correct
deficient surfaces before proceeding with carpeting work. Base screed surface to
be trowelled smooth.
3.1.2 Do not lay carpets until the building is weathertight, wet trades have finished, the
building is well dried out, paintwork is finished and dry and socket outlets, duct
covers and other fixtures around which the carpet needs to be cut have been fixed.
3.1.3 Clean floor surfaces with cleaning agents recommended by carpeting
manufacturer and by wet mopping. Floors shall be vacuumed clean.

3.1.4 Check that doors that will swing over carpeted areas will have sufficient clearance.
Check that saddles are properly located and are at correct elevation.
3.1.5 Protect adjacent surfaces from adhesive and soiling resulting from carpeting
installation.
3.1.6 Skirtings shall be installed prior to installation of carpeting.
3.2 Installation
3.2.1 Install carpet in strict accordance with manufacturer's instructions and as herein
specified.
3.2.2 It is the responsibility of the Contractor to understand the concrete properties in
regard to drying, curing, dusting, etc., and to propose the proper surface
preparation which will ensure an even, stable and lasting carpet installation.
3.2.3 Carpet shall be installed wall-to-wall so that all portions of the floor area are
covered. Carpet shall be run under open bottom equipment and shall be tight
against vertical surfaces, and shall fit to all existing conditions.
3.2.4 Carpets shall be laid so that the pattern matches when repeating motif occurs.
3.2.5 Carpet seams shall be overlapped, double out, glued and taped. Cross seams
shall be kept to a minimum and be located in low traffic areas.
3.2.6 Lay carpets on substrate with seams straight and parallel to the main axes of the
room with all lengths having the pile lying in the same direction. Power stretch
carpet for tackless fixing on to edge grippers and form a neat rolled edge at
junction with walls or other vertical surfaces.
3.2.7 Fix free edges of carpet with naplok binder bar. Use double binder bar for fixing
where carpets of different types meet or where carpets are laid both sides of a
doorway.
3.2.8 The installation shall result in an even, continuous surface. All carpet tiles shall
tightly adjoin with no gaps or irregularities.
3.2.10 Laying with adhesive (if carpet does not have tackifier backing)
a) Prime the base where necessary and allow to dry thoroughly.
b) Spread adhesive to an even coverage wihout trowel ridges.
c) Lay carpet during the open time of the adhesive and smooth out perfectly
flat to exclude all air and fully bond
d) Do not use roller unless specified by carpet manufacturer
e) Roll carpet shall be installed without the use of wet adhesives.
3.2.11 Tiles shall be installed in a continuous grid, and the finished installation shall be
monolithic in appearance, with all "grain" laid in the same direction.
3.2.12 Tiles shall be installed within each floor area so that all partial tiles occur only at
the perimeter of the area or at vertical obstructions, columns, partitions, etc., and
are of the maximum possible dimension.
3.2.13 Cutting of tiles shall be done with a sharp blade and a straight-edge so that a
straight line results, and no tears or gaps occur in the face or in the backing
material. All fitting cuts shall be made by the carpet manufacturer's recommended
methods.
3.3 Seaming Requirements
3.3.1 Seaming drawings for each area to be carpeted shall be submitted for Architect's
review, showing seams, pattern, colour, widths of carpeting, orientation of widths,
trim strips and any pertinent installation details. No carpeting shall be installed
until approvals have been received.

3.3.2 Seams shall be held to a minimum. Seams shall be located so as to use large
size sections of carpeting, no piecing or patching of carpeting permitted. No filler
pieces narrower than 300mm wide.
3.3.3 Seams shall be butted, straight and true, to produce flush, tightly butted and
inconspicuous joints. End seams shall be at 90 degrees to side seams.
3.3.4 No seams shall occur perpendicular to doors, openings or entries. Seams
occurring at doors shall be parallel to doors and shall be centred directly under the
door.
3.3.5 Seams occurring at change of direction in hallways shall be mitred or otherwise
cut as required for the continuation of the patterned carpet.
3.3.6 Seams for carpet which do not appear on approved seaming drawing shall not be
allowed in the finish work.
3.4 Cleaning and Protection
3.4.1 Cleaning - Immediately after completion of installing of carpeting in an area, all
excess carpet and waste and all other resulting rubbish and debris shall be
removed from the premises. Then clean carpet of all spots with proper spot
remover. Remove all loose threads with sharp scissors and vacuum clean all
carpeting.
3.4.2 Protection - Immediately after cleaning of carpeting, protect cleaned carpet with 6
mil polyethylene sheets, taped in place. In areas of main circulation, also install
over the polyethylene sheet protection 6 mm thick tempered hardboard panels.
Immediately prior to the Architect's issue of Completion Certificate, remove
protection, clean and vacuum any carpeting that has become soiled, and replace
damaged carpeting with new, full section of carpeting (not "patches")
3.5 Acceptance
3.5.1 The completed installation of all carpeting shall have the acceptance of the
Architect. Carpeting shall be smooth and even; free from tacks, scraps, carpet
ripples, scallops, puckers and other defects; seams inconspicuous, tight, straight
and true; carpet free of any discolouration or soiling; and carpet shall show no
buckles and no open joints.
