ABSTRACT

Iligan City is currently experiencing problem in traffic congestion due to the


increasing number of vehicles and illegal parking. With the mentioned current issues,
this study aims to come up with a conceptualized design that will serve as a model for
the Proposed Conceptual Design of a Three-Storey Parking Building in Iligan City that
will generally solve the problems and to also provide a better parking area for the
owners.

The researchers gathered the data following these methods:

1. The researchers interviewed citizens in Iligan city, Private car owners,


Jeepney drivers.
2. Comments and Suggestions collected from the interviews were used as
basis to come up with three different schemes that solves the current
problems of traffic congestion in Iligan City (Aesthetic Appeal, Parking
capacity, Organization of Structure)
3. 300 individuals were interviewed for a survey conducted by the
researchers to choose the scheme that they think is the best scheme to be
the model for the Proposed Conceptual Design of a Three-Storey
Parking Building.

Results revealed that the three(3) schemes, the respondents favoured the 3rd scheme
consist of an open-rectangular shaped 3 storey Cast-in-Place Concrete Parking
Structure which composed of a 90-degree parking bay that allows 166 parking spaces
with two-way traffic flow, an Exterior Circular Ramp (intended for vehicle exit) and
two car lifts. Elevators are also provided.

As a conclusion, the third scheme will serve as the final conceptual design for the
Proposed Conceptual Design of a Three-Storey Parking Building.
CHAPTER 1
INTRODUCTION

1.1 Background of the Study

Industrialization and the improvements in the automobile industry


had not only resulted in increased wealth but it had led to traffic
congestion and parking problems in cities. Parking is creating problems
mainly because people have to cruise around to find a vacant parking spot
in the urban network. As more and more people got cars, the need for a
place to park, it was growing bigger and bigger.

In Iligan City, the numbers of newly registered vehicles have


increased tremendously, and is difficult for the car owners with lack of
parking spaces and poor traffic flow in the area.

A Parking Building is our primary solution in one of the major


problem in Iligan City which is the heavy traffic. A Parking Building or
a multi storey car park also called a parking structure, is a building
designed for vehicle parking and where there are a number of floors or
levels on which parking takes place. It should be designed to meet the
citizen’s expectations and high quality characteristics, attractiveness,
based on project conditions and development plans. The researchers
proposed three schemes of the conceptual design and the result of the
chosen scheme by the respondents are being presented.

Therefore, the researchers came up with an idea to conceptualize a


design of a Parking Building in Iligan City.
1.2 Statement of the Main Objective

The main objective of the study is to conceptualize a design that will serve as a
model for a Three-storey Parking Building to reduce traffic congestion in Iligan
City. Specifically it will seek to answer the following objective:

1.4 Hypothesis

1. There is an appropriate conceptual design of a Three-storey Parking


Building for traffic reduction in Iligan City.
1.5 Significance of the Study

The proposed conceptual design of a three-storey parking building in


Iligan City has a significant concern in the solution of traffic congestions, illegal
parking, and aesthetic design which will bring a well balance and sustainable
urban development. Since Iligan City is the top 3 richest city in Mindanao and
the city of waterfalls, where number of vehicles and tourists are expected which
leads to traffic problem. This project study is beneficial to the following:

Private car owners will park their vehicles in safe place and avoid illegal
parking fee.

Government of Iligan City will benefit in the proposed parking building


through economic development and convenience in public.

Students/Instructors will have betterment in their studies and lectures if


they arrive in school on time.

Future Researcher will be able to use this study as a basis for their study
and the can also do a follow-up on the recommendations given.

1.6 Scope and Limitations of the Study

This study focuses only on the conceptual design of a Three-storey


Parking Building in Iligan City. The research instruments used in this study are
the three schemes of conceptual designs of a Three-storey Parking Building, the
initial interview with the Citizens in Iligan City, private car owners and jeepney
drivers, and the survey conducted on the 300 respondents.
1.7 Operational Definition of Terms

Conceptual – Refers to being characterized by ideas and concepts of


designs for the Proposed Conceptual Three- Storey Parking Building

Traffic Congestion – Refers to the problem that Iligan City is currently


facing

Jeepney drivers – Refers to the public vehicle use for transportation in


the Philippines especially in Iligan.

Aesthetic – Refers to the appropriate appearance of the Proposed


Conceptual Three- Storey Parking Building

Terminal – refers to the location on which the Jeepneys and other public
vehicles are being stationed.

Approximate- refers to the estimated correspondent that is being


interviewed by the researchers

Scheme- refers to the proposed design for the Proposed Conceptual


Three- Storey Parking Building

Cast-in-Place – refers on how the Proposed Conceptual Three- Storey


Parking Building is being constructed and it is a concreting technique
which is undertaken in situ or in the concrete component's finished
position

Single Helix Ramps – refers to the ramp that is being used at scheme 1.

Rubric- is a tool used to evaluate the people’s responses. Usually contain


evaluative criteria and are often presented in table format.
