Design procedure for column (as per BS8110: Part 1:1997)

1.Find effective height of the column from the formula

Le=Lo
 value from 3.19 and 3.20 for braced and unbraced columns
2.slenderness ratio check (whether it is short column or slender column)
Short columns
le l
and e < 15 ( braced )
h b
le l
and e < 10 ( unbraced )
h b
Slender columns
le l
and e > 15 ( braced )
h b
le l
and e > 10 ( unbraced )
h b

Design procedure for Short column

1.Assume the size of column

2.check for eccentricity
emin  0.05 * overall dimension of the column
emin should not greater than 20mm
2.Calculate Asc required for the effect of Axial load alone.
N  0.35 f cu Ac  0.67 Asc f y

Asc not less than 0.4%

3.Alternatively calculate Asc required for the moment alone
