LEARNING COMPETENCY CODE: EN9V-IIa-27: Give the appropriate communicative styles for
various situations (frozen, formal, consultative, casual, and intimate).

I. OBJECTIVES

At the end of the lesson the students should be able to:


A. Identify and differentiate the different types of speech style;
B. Recognize the value of Speech style in appropriate situations and locations; and
C. Apply the types of Speech Style in various communications.

II. SUBJECT MATTER

A. TOPIC: Types of Speech Style


B. MATERIALS: Power point Presentation, Chalk and Board
C. REFERENCE: Oral Communication in Context

III. PROCEDURE

A. ROUTINELY ACTIVITIES
a. Prayer
b. Greetings and Classroom management
c. Checking of Attendance

B. LESSON REVIEW
-The students will watch video clips and have them identify the type of speech context used in
each video.

C. MOTIVATION
1. - The students will be grouped into five (5)
- Each group will be given pictures
- Have them analyze the picture by answering the given questions
1. Who is/are in the picture?
2. What role do they play in the society?
3. How do they communicate/talk to people/with each other (if the picture is in group)?
2. Let us play “Anetch Itey” Guess the Word Game.
- With the same group, students have to guess the meaning the words to be flashed on the
screen.

D. LESSON PROPER

- The students will listen attentively to the discussion of Types of Speech Style.
- Each type has a picture to be shown that corresponds accordingly.

a. FROZEN- this type of communications rarely or never changes. It is “frozen” in time


and content.
Example:
Pledge of Allegiance, Lord’s Player, Preamble of the Constitution,
Law

b. FORMAL - this language is used in formal settings and is one-way in nature.


This use of language usually follows a commonly accepted format.
Example:
Speeches, debates, sermons and circular memorandum

c. CONSULTATIVE- this is a standard form of communications.


Users engage in a mutually accepted structure of communications.
Example:
Lawyer and client, teachers and student
d. CASUAL- this is informal language used by peers and friends .
Slang, vulgarities and colloquialisms are normal.
This is commonly known as “group language”
Example: Jejemon, group language, Gay lingo

e. INTIMATE- this communication is private.


It is reserved for close family members or intimate people.
Example:
Husband and wife, boyfriend and girlfriend, sibling talk, and
Parent and baby.

Have them listen to the song entitled “When You Say Nothing at All” by Ronan Keating
and have them analyze the lines
“ …The smile on your face lets me know that you need me
There’s a truth in your eyes saying you’ll never leave me
The touch of your hands says you’ll catch me wherever I fall
You say it best , when you say nothing at all”
E. APPLICATION

Each group will pick a piece of paper where given scenarios are written;
- they will create a short skit and they will identify the type of speech style appropriate to the
situation/ acts.
A. Wedding Ceremony
B. Senatorial Campaign
C. Teacher-Student or Parent-Teacher Conference (One on One)
D. Group conversation of Friends
E. An Intimate date of Boyfriend and Girlfriend

F. GENERALIZATION

There will be a recap of the tackled lesson and students have to answer the questions.
Each type will be given examples and brief explanation by answering the questions.

What is the importance of the different speech styles in communication?

Does situation matter?

Does location important?

How the different speech styles can be distinguished to one another?

What situations are appropriate to different speech styles? (Use the same pictures presented earlier in
identifying speech styles on various situations)

IV. EVALUATION

Each group will be tasked to perform the following:

GROUP 1- Compose a Students’ Prayer. Your prayer should have a frozen type of speech style
GROUP 2- Role Play a scenario in the court. You should use formal type of speech style
GROUP 3- Role play a scenario in the hospital. You should use consultative type of speech style in your
dialogues.
GROUP 4- Compose at least two friendship letters using casual type of speech style.
GROUP 5- Write a song about love using intimate type of speech style and sing it in front of the class.

V. ASSIGNMENT
The students are tasked to do the activity below as reinforcement and enrichment of the lesson.

- Create a comic strip that shows the application of the different types of Speech Style
(Reinforcement of the lesson)
