PERSONAL PROTECTIVE EQUIPMENT

Eye protection must be worn Safety boots must be Protective clothing must be
at all times worn at all times worn

Mandatory requirements are

specified and must be Keep aisles and work Respiratory protection if
followed. Report any area clean ventilation can’t be assured
accidents.
PRE-OPERATIONAL SAFETY CHECKS
 Explosive delivery system shall be decontaminated and then inspected to ensure it is in a serviceable
condition. Pay close attention to any areas exposed to explosive products such as kettle/ tanks/ detonator
box/ Detonator cord holders/ toolboxes/ tool bins, and structural components that could potentially capture/
hold explosive products.
 Inspect for the formation of Tetraamine Copper Nitrate (TACN). This can form if copper or copper alloys are
exposed to ammonium nitrate. Ensure no copper containing components are used near the explosive delivery
system.
 Inspect all PPE for Serviceability
 Clear immediate area of any personnel not required for the task, equipment and tools before conducting any
inspection/ decontamination.
 Check ventilation in inspection area. Conduct Inspection outside where possible, utilise fans and natural
ventilation if testing indoors.

OPERATIONAL SAFETY CHECKS (Control measures in place)

Ensure ALL hazards are controlled at all times through good work practice
 Ensure all PPE including gloves/ dust mask if required are utilised.
 Check equipment such as storage bags (waste bags) cleaning equipment (vacuum suction guns) and
pressure washer etc. are serviceable.
 Test Fire hose and Inspect Fire extinguisher condition.
 If the Explosive Delivery System is not a unit you have been trained & assessed to operate/ maintain, STOP
and see your supervisor. A limited visually inspection should still be carried out without operating the system.

STEP BY STEP WORK PROCEDURE

Set up for Inspection:

1. Park machine in well ventilated area clear of obstructions and personnel if possible.
2. Inspect Explosive delivery system control systems (air operation for ANFO loaders and Electric/ Hydraulic
controls for Emulsion systems.
3. With the delivery hose(s) safety held by another person, or secured to a fixed and stable object, operate the
charge circuit to open the delivery valves to check for pressurisation and/ or residue product. Ensure the
hose/ outlet is directed away from personnel and preferably into a suitable container (such as an empty IBC)
4. De-energise the control system:
a. For air operated systems depressurise the pressure vessels and any control system circuits. Utilise
any Pressure Relief Valves or dump valves fitted.
b. For hydraulic/ electrically operated systems de energise the power supply or depressurise the
hydraulic system(s). Isolate and fit lock if applicable.
5. Isolate Delivery system functions by isolating the power source:
a. For Air supply systems disconnect supply air, or if fitted manually shut off any compressor supply
lines or isolate the compressor power supply (Electric/ Hydraulic).
b. For Hydraulic/ Electrically operated systems turn the machine power off and isolate and fit lock to the
isolation point.
6. Test the control system for dead by operating the control systems to active the charging process. If control
system still works, re assess the controls used to isolate the circuits and re isolate, then:
a. Test for dead again to confirm isolation process. If the circuits are still not isolated correctly, inform
your supervisor and request assistance from other Normet Tech Support avenues, or the OEM of the
Explosive system, or the customer (if used unit).
b. Do not proceed until confirmation of Isolation and de pressurisation is confirmed.
Warning: Always assume the vessel is pressurised even if depressurising and isolation have occurred.
7. Loosen & release the vessel/ tank lid, ensuring you take care to prevent injury from components/ products
ejecting from the vessel under pressure.
8. Disconnect all delivery lines from the kettle/ Emulsion kit pump, again ensuring that care is taken.
9. Inspect:
a. All external and internal surfaces of the vessel/ tank.
b. Inspect the accessible delivery lines externally and internally.
c. Open any manually operated valves and inspect the valve and any ports/ lines/ pipes attached to the
valve externally and internally.
d. Inspect the Pressure Relief valve (if applicable) - note the last date on inspection tag (if fitted).
10. Operate the control circuit for the air/ hydraulic/ electrically operated valves:
a. Remove the isolation controls put into place and operate the delivery ON/Off valves to check for
residue product in the delivery valve body/ ejector valve and supply line/ assembly. If air is being

used (for activation circuit controls) ensure regulator(s) are turned down to a low pressure prior to
operating. Only increase the regulated air pressure if it is required to operate the valve correctly.
11. For ANFO kettles:
a. Run water through the kettle until clean water (no ANFO residue) can be seen running from the outlet
trunk/ delivery/ ejector valve.
b. Run water through any delivery hoses, fittings and or connectors that are delivered with or fitted to
the kettle discharge circuit until clean water can be seen running from the outlet.
c. Clean all lids, caps and fittings with clean water. Inspect the lid seal.
d. If fitted with air dam/ anti compacting mechanism, disassemble, remove and clean if product could be
caught inside. Isolation will be required prior to disassembly.
e. Inspect and report on all components.
12. For Emulsion kits
a. Open the tank lid and outlet, or disconnect the tank to pump hose assembly, flush water through the
tank assembly until clean water comes out.
b. Remove supply and outlet hoses from the product pump. Inspect and clean hoses if required.
c. Open tank caps and outlet hoses for Gasser tanks and flush with water until clean.
d. Disconnect and flush injection manifolds in the delivery circuit.
e. Open and flush any additional circuits such as Flush lines, bulk fill lines or test/ purge lines with water.
f. Flush any delivery/ charge hoses delivered with the unit (if used).
13. Inspect machine chassis, toolboxes and any surfaces, holes or voids that could potentially hold Explosive
product. Wash all areas thoroughly with clean water.
14. Air dry all components and reinspect for residue. If residue still remains re wash and re inspect individual
components.
Recording Results:
1. Complete a copy of the Normet Explosive Sterilisation Record. Present this report to your supervisor.
2. Once signed copy the Record. File one copy in the Activity Plan folder for the machine or hand to your
supervisor.
3. Keep one copy to be attached to the delivery system.
Delivery Unit labelling:
1. Attach a signed copy of the completed Normet Explosive Sterilisation Record to the delivery system.
2. Enclose in a plastic sleeve and display in a prominent position on the delivery system tank, control panel or
easy to see position.
3. Use tape or similar to ensure the document does not fall off during transport or storage.
4. Ensure the document is weather proof in case the unit is to be stored outside.
