DESCRIPTION:
1. Carry out FDR download using Portable Interface.
2. Record Underwater Locator Beacon P/N, S/N, and Expiry/Replace Date
in Appendix 2.
3. Fwd storage media to KUL Flight Data Analysis with completed
Appendix 2.
REASON:
Mandated by CAAM through Airworthiness Notice (AN) NO.83.

INSTRUCTIONS:
A. GENERAL INFORMATION:
CAUTION:
ALWAYS OBEY THE PRECAUTIONS THAT FOLLOW TO KEEP ELECTRICAL
WIRING IN A SATISFACTORY CONDITION (ELECTRICALLY AND
MECHANICALLY SERVICEABLE). WHEN YOU DO MAINTENANCE WORK,
REPAIRS OR MODIFICATIONS, ALWAYS KEEP ELECTRICAL WIRING,
COMPONENTS AND THE WORK AREA AS CLEAN AS POSSIBLE. TO DO THIS:
PUT PROTECTION, SUCH AS PLASTIC SHEETING, CLOTHS, ETC. AS NECESSARY ON WIRING AND
COMPONENTS
REGULARLY REMOVE ALL SHAVINGS, UNWANTED MATERIAL AND OTHER CONTAMINATION.
WARNING:
PUT WARNING NOTICES IN THE COCKPIT TO TELL PERSONS NOT TO OPERATE THE FLIGHT CONTROLS.
THE MOVEMENT OF THE TRIMMABLE HORIZONTAL STABILIZER (THS) CAN CAUSE INJURY TO PERSONS.
B. WORK INSTRUCTION:
1. Energize the aircraft electrical circuits per AMM TASK 24-41-00-861-002. Make sure that FDR is powered and the
unit is free of fault.
NOTES: Portable Interface obtains electrical power from FDR for its operations.
Do not remove the FDR from the mounting tray when performing this EI.
2. Put warning notices in the cockpit in position to tell persons not to operate the flight controls.
3. Put the access platform in position at the access panel 312AR. Open the access panel 312AR and set the light switch
3LJ to the on position.
4. Inspect the Underwater Locator Beacon (ULB) and record the P/N, S/N, and Expiry/Replace Date of the ULB in
Appendix 2.
NOTE: If the P/N, S/N and Expiry/Replace Date are not readable, remove and reinstall the ULB as per AMM
TASK 31-33-55-920-001.
5. Loosen the FDR nameplate nuts and push the nameplate upwards to gain access to the FDR’s GSE Connector.
Refer to Figure 1 for nameplate location.
NOTE: To energize and de-energize the DFDR it is necessary to push the GND/CTR pushbutton on the overhead
panel 21VU
6. Connect the Portable Interface Connector to the FDR’s GSE Connector.

8. If download failed, record information below and perform step 7 again. If problem persist, abort this EI.
(a) Stage of process where download failed.
Ex. Before Progress screen appear, During Progress Screen countdown or After Progress Screen count to
zero.
(b) Confirm progress screen counting as per normal.
(c) Abnormal findings
(d) Record PI error message.
Note: Appropriate error message will appear on the PI screen. The copy error message will persist until the green MENU
key is pressed.
9. Disconnect the Portable Interface from the FDR’s GSE Connector. Close the FDR’s GSE Connector and tighten the
nuts.
12. Make sure that the work area is clean and clear of tools(s) and other items. Set the light switch 3LJ to the OFF
position and close the access panel 312AR. Remove the access platform. Remove the warning notice(s).
13. De-energize the aircraft electrical circuits. (Ref. AMM Task 24-41-00-862-002).
15. Forward Appendix 2 together with the storage media to Technical Services – Flight Data for FDR data analysis.

Appendix 1
1. On the Portable Interface (PI), get access to the PCMCIA card slot located at the bottom end of the PI under the
end cap. This can be done by pressing both side of the end cap to detach it from the unit. Insert PCMCIA card
into the slot with the front face of the card facing up. When the card is fully push in, the black plastic eject
button next to slot will push out. Reattached the end cap. Refer to Figure 2.
NOTE: If the PCMCIA Card is not properly aligned into the slot, the card will not be able to be fully inserted into
to the Portable Interface.
2. Copy the FDR data to the PCMCIA card per instruction below:
NOTE: To familiarize with Portable Interface Menu, refer to Figure 3 and Figure 4.
a) From MAIN MENU, select COPY.
NOTE: User cannot enter COPY MENU unless PCMCIA card is in place at the PCMCIA slot.
b) In the COPY MENU create the file name. For the file name, enter aircraft registration and the download
date.
Ex: 9MAFM240307 for 9M-AFM carry out on 24 March 2007
c) Select START.
d) In START COPY MENU, select Full Download/Full Dump.
Important Note: Confirm that full download has been highlighted and retained before proceed to next
step.
A progress screen (COPY TIME REMAINING) appears and display a countdown of the estimated
Seconds remaining until the copy is completed. When copy completed the screen return to
MAIN MENU display. If copy failed, proceed to Step 3, otherwise skip Step 3.
CAUTION: DO NOT attempt to remove the PCMCIA card from the PC slot during copy progress.
This can corrupt the disk.
NOTE: In emergency situation, pressing the green MENU key TWICE IN RAPID SUCCESSION will abort the
copy process.

3. If download failed, record information below and perform step 2 again. If problem persist, abort this EI.

SECTION B: ACCOMPLISHMENT INSTRUCTIONS
1. Upon connection, the PI will initiate a startup. Plug in the USB Flash Drive after the start up process (if
provided).
NOTE 1: Do not insert the USB Flash Drive during this start up process. Only insert the USB Flash Drive after
the startup is completed.
2. Download the FDR data to the storage media per instruction below:
a) From the MAIN MENU, click the button “1” to SELECT AIRCRAFT.
b) Toggle to A320 and click the right cursor to select that option.
c) Browse and select the aircraft tail number and click the right cursor again to select the desired tail number.
d) If the desired aircraft tail number are not in the list, add aircraft tail number as per Step 3.
e) Click C to return to MAIN MENU. Ensure the aircraft tail displayed under SELECT AIRCRAFT is correct.
g) Select the USB Flash Drive (if provided) or Internal as storage location for the file download and click OK.
NOTE 1: Do not remove the power cable from recorder and the PI/2 during the download.
NOTE 2: Same USB Flash Drive can store data for up to 6 downloads (FDR & CVR).
h) Once download is complete, click C to return to the MAIN MENU display. Remove USB Flash Drive to be
forwarded to Technical Services.
a) From the MAIN MENU, click the button “1” to SELECT AIRCRAFT.
e) Once aircraft model has been inserted, click C to exit the character list.

f) Return to ADD AIRCRAFT menu by clicking C again. This will deselect the SET MODEL option.
g) Repeat Steps (c) to (f) for setting up aircraft tail number as per example below. (ADD AIRCRAFT > SET
TAIL)
Eg: 9M-AFB
h) Once both aircraft model and aircraft tail number has been setup, toggle to ADD. Select by clicking the
right cursor.
k) Select the newly added tail number; refer to Steps 2 (b) and (c).
