Series Resonance

✓In Electrical Circuit if capacitive reactance (Xc) is equal to the inductive

reactance (XL) then that circuit is said to be in Resonance.

✓At resonance the current in the circuit is in phase with applied voltage.

✓The frequency at which resonance occurs is called as Resonant Frequency (fr)

✓At resonant frequency the voltage across capacitance & voltage across
inductor are equal in magnitude but

Quality factor (Q) or Figure of Merit or Selectivity

The Quality factor (Q) is the ratio of the reactive power in inductor or
capacitor to the True power in the resistance in series with the coil or
capacitor

➢Quality factor of Inductance Circuit

➢Quality factor of Capacitance Circuit

Selectivity indicates that how well Resonant circuit responds to a

certain frequency and eliminates all other frequency.

The narrower theCummins

bandwidth, greaterforthe selectivity.

Parallel resonance

❑ When XC = XL the two branch currents are equal in magnitude and 1800 out
of phase with Each other. Therefore the two currents cancel each other and
total current is zero.

❑ In Special Case RL = RC.
