Chapter I:

PROBLEM AND IT’S BACKGROUND

Introduction

Rapid advancements in technology in today’s world have been accompanied by the need for

equipping classrooms with the best educational technology. The biggest challenge in

incorporating technology into learning is allowing students to take advantage of learning

technology while ensuring that the class is productive and well managed. The internet is a web of

information providing access to millions of data of information to people. Computers are one of

the best ways to access the internet.

Schools have been implementing ways to give students access to computers, with most using

computer laboratories. Computer laboratories give students access to various online services

which they may not have access to at home for various reasons. There is a noticeable impact to

students when there is a lack of computer facilities.

2
Background of the Study

Learning, according to Merriam Webster’s Dictionary is defined as the process of gaining

knowledge or skill by studying, practicing, being taught, or experiencing something.

Achievements, is defined as a result gained by effort.

After tracing the above descriptions, it is understandable that learning achievements is the result

or level of ability related to school or in the academic field that has been achieved by students

after they have put in effort.

A computer is a machine that can be used by students to access various tools that can help make

their school life easier. It is understandable that students who lack access to computers will be at

a disadvantage to students who do. These students will most likely have to rely on their school’s

own computer laboratory in order to catch up.

According to Jenny Ye, a Computer Science student at Harvard, it is better to start early when it

comes to learning with computers, and what better way than to learn it in school. Programming

students especially need more time to learn various computer related skills that they may not be

able to learn if they lack computer facilities at home.

According to Elizabeth Stark, who taught technology and the Internet at Stanford University and

Yale University. The future of any countries’ economy depends upon technological progress, and

learning basic skills like computational thinking and programming are great ways to expose

students at an early age to its importance.

This study was made in order to find the correlation between computers, programming student’s

learning achievements and how the lack of computer laboratories affects them.

Theoretical Framework

Three theories were chosen for this study, they are as follows:

1. Cognitive Theory (Jane Piaget, Jerome Seymour, Bruner & David P. Ausubel) – this

theory concerns mental processes that cannot be observed through human beings’

problem-solving process and human beings’ learning strategies. In education, this theory

is used to develop students’ capabilities of creative thinking, information, analyzing, and

problem-solving through computer-assisted instruction.

2. Information Processing Theory (John William Atkinson & Richard Shiffrin) – This

theory proposes that humans process the information they receive rather than by stimuli

from other sources.

3. Educational Theory (John Dewey)- Also known as “Experiential education” this theory

focuses on “learning by doing or hands-on learning”. Dewey believed that people learn

best by experience.

computers in the future.

A.) Students can develop skills by processing different information they can gather using

computers.

B.) Students are able to learn different skills from watching how different people use

computers for their career.

C.) The use of computers can allow students to process different skills in using computers for

the future.

ABC.) Computers allow students access to different tools that they can use for their present and

their futures. Students who have easy access to computers may hone skills that may be necessary

for their occupation. Students who are behind in certain subjects can use computers at school to

catch up to others by studying using the internet or watch videos from educational sites. The lack

of computer labs at school severely affect the learning achievements of students.

7
Significance of the Study

The results of this study will be of great benefit to the following people.

 Future Researchers – This study will help future researchers with the information

gathered for their own research.

 Parents- The study will help inform parents of prices of computer rental expenses. It can

help them save money for their expenses.

 Students – The study would give awareness to students about the impacts of the lack of

computer laboratories on their academic performance.

 Teachers- The study will help them do more computer related activities due to having

more awareness of the importance of computers on students learning achievements.

 The School - The study will help the school by giving importance to the expansion of

facilities based on the school.

 DepEd- This study will help give information to the importance of computers to the

academic achievement of students.

 School heads – The study will help give an idea to School heads of the importance of

computer laboratories to students’ learning achievements and may help them decide on

how to proceed with how the school functions.

8
Scope and Delimit

The scope of the study will be respondents from the sections TEC 1, 2, & 3 Grade 11 as well as

respondents from Grade 12 programming students of AMA Las Pinas S.Y. 2019-2020. The

objective is to find out the impacts of the lack of computer laboratories to the learning

achievements of students through the use of questionnaires. With the purpose to inform school

heads to provide more computer laboratories and give more info about the importance of

Foreign

The investigation centers around the PC research center class as a learning situation in college

courses. It is included in the advancements and approval of two instruments. The Computer

Laboratory Environment Inventory (CLEI) and the Attitude towards Computing and Computing

Course Questionnaire (ACCC). The CLEI has five scales for estimating understudies view of

parts of their research facility condition. These are student cohesiveness, open-endedness,

integration, technology adequacy and laboratory availability. The ACCC has four scales, anxiety,

enjoyment, useful of computers and usefulness of the course. The instruments were regulated at

three colleges, one in Australia, one in England and one in the United States. The classes studied

incorporated those in which the improvement of programming was the focal point of the study,

for example, Information Systems and Computer Science, and others in which the PC was

utilized as an apparatus. Except for laboratory availability, all the earth factors were found to

connect essentially with every single attitudinal variable. The main condition variable with

critical relationship with accomplishment was student cohesiveness. Notwithstanding, the

outcomes demonstrated that there was a huge relationship between the attitudinal factors,

anxiety, enjoyment and usefulness of the course and accomplishment.

10
Relapse investigation upheld the discoveries that the earth factors made a noteworthy

commitment to the attitudinal factors and these thus made a huge commitment to

accomplishment, further examination utilizing auxiliary condition, demonstrating proposes that

PC research facility condition influences accomplishment in a roundabout way by

straightforwardly influencing understudies dispositions towards PCs yet much more so their

mentality towards the course. The noteworthiness of the investigation is, that it is one of the main

that has explored the adequacy of PC lab classes in a college setting which the PC lab is

fundamental to the control being considered. The outcomes exhibit the significance of the

research facility condition in those courses in which the PC assumes a noteworthy job. The CLEI

will be helpful in the structure and execution of the research facility plant of a course and in the

developmental assessment of such a course.

Local

Assessment is imperative to check the qualities, shortcomings, and viability of any movement.

This investigation assessed the province, Philippines by the Commission on Information and

Communications Technology (CICT) in association with the choose state colleges and colleges.

Utilizing study polls, information were assembled from the open secondary teachers who were

beneficial of the task. To enhance information from the study, interviews with the principals and

ICT. Organizers and genuine perception of classes in the research facility were likewise done.

Discoveries demonstrated that the recipient schools experienced issues in task usage.

11
These issues incorporate equipment disappointment, trouble on the utilization of programming

bundle, absence of follow-up on ability assembling, no accessible web association, constrained

access to the research facility, and absence of fix/support of the gear in the lab, regardless of

these issues, be that as it may, the venture was evaluated by the educators as extremely

acceptable as far as undertaking organization, venture segments, and task conveyance

framework. This suggests the task by and large was compelling in accomplishing it’s

destinations which is ICT reconciliation in instruction and to connect the computerized gap

among open secondary teachers.
