ISLA NG CARRIBEAN
vAng mga isla ng Dagat Caribbean o West Indies ay isang
malawak na kapuluan sa malayong kanluran ng Karagatang
Atlantiko, na kadalasang sa pagitan ng North at South
America.
vAng lugar na ito ay unang pinanahanan ng mga Arawak
Indians, pagkatapos ay sinalakay ng isang mas agresibong

vThe major political system is democracy, with many different party
systems within many of the countries. Party systems are a variety of

into three types: one-party
system, multi-party systems
and two-party systems.
1. The one party system can be
found in Cuba. It is a
revolutionary socialist
democracy adopted from
communism.

primarily in the Anglophone countries.
The classic two party systems can be
found in Jamaica and The Bahamas.
Jamaica is a classic representation of
the British government. It is the only
country in the region to have had two
parties in the first elections. Several of
the island in the Caribbean remain under
the control of colonial powers.

vThe term Caribbean culture summarizes
the artistic, musical, literary, culinary,
political and social elements that are
representative of Caribbean people all
over the world.
vThe Caribbean's culture has historically
been influenced by that of African and
Amerindian traditions. It has also been

linguistic, economic, and cultural
neighbor, the United States.

language literature, which are rooted
in the literary traditions of Spain,

Award in the 2006 Commonwealth

ØSir V. S. Naipaul won the Nobel Prize in

Prize in 1971, and was awarded the
Trinity Cross of Trinidad and Tobago.

vSince Spanish explorer Columbus arrived and established the
permanent colonies, the islands have produced their own
composers, musicians and ensembles.
vFrom the 17th century onwards, they have developed a music
infrastructure.
v The music has subsequently been heavily influenced by
American culture because of its proximity and migration between
the two regions.

vThis is an integral part of the Caribbean identity.
There are several traditions in Caribbean humour in
English, Spanish and French.
vVarious trends can be noted in Caribbean comedy.
One trend is the portrayal of a "typical" Caribbean
family in an ongoing radio or television series.

vThe annual celebration of carnival is an
important part of Caribbean culture.
Traditionally, most Caribbean islands celebrate
carnival on Ash Wednesday or the days leading
up to Lent.

vJonkonnu (a.k.a. Junkanoo)
• is a festival celebrated widely in the British islands, and it is
especially popular in Jamaica and the Bahamas.
• Its name is derived from a real person, who was an African
named John Canoe. A prince and slave trader, he was said to
have outwitted the British in the 17th century and taken
control of a fort. He terrified the British and Dutch slave
traders, and so became a hero of the slaves.

vCrop Over
• Barbados spent many years as the most important sugar-
producing island of the Caribbean.
• This festival began as a way to celebrate the end of the sugar
production process, but by the mid 20th century, Crop Over was
no longer celebrated.
• he Barbadian people reinstated the festival in the 1970s as an
important piece of their own heritage. Many compare Crop Over
to a Mardi-Gras style celebration.

•This St. Lucian festival is one of the best-known
weekly events in the Caribbean.
•Each Friday night, Gros Islet takes to the streets
with music and vendors. An opportunity to sample
St. Lucian barbecue should not be missed. You can

ISPORTS SA CARRIBEAN
vA wide variety of sporting and gaming contests take place all year
throughout the Caribbean. On land, there are tournaments in rugby,
cricket, horse racing, and car racing.

based triathlons and swimming and yachting races. A yachting
regatta invites both seafaring and land-dwelling partiers.
