INTRODUCTION
In the era of globalization and technological revolution, education is considered as a first
step for every human activity. It plays a vital role in the development of human capital and is
linked with an individual well-being and opportunities for better living. It ensures the acquisition
of knowledge and skills that enable individual to increase their productivity and improve their
quality of life. Success as the name implies is wished for by everybody but it is not easily come
by on a mere platter of gold; one must work for it through hard work and diligence.

The student performance play an important role in producing the best quality graduates
who will become great leaders and manpower for a country thus responsible for the country
economic and social development,( Ali et al.,2009) student performance occupies a very important
place in education as well as in the learning process.

Azikiwe (1998) describes the study techniques as “the adopted way and manner a student
plans his private readings, after classroom learning so as to attain mastery of the subject”.
According to her, “good study techniques are good assets to learners because the (techniques)
assist students to attain mastery in areas of specialization and consequent excellent performance,
while opposite constitute constraints to learning and achievement leading to failure”.

Although studies abound on the causative and predictive nature of factors of study habit on
students academic achievement, all factors of the variables tend to focus on poor study habit while
the effect is yet to be fully accessed on the nations educational development. Study habits are
important as they influence the academic performance of students so parents and teachers must
help in improving the study habits of students.

This study aims to determine the result of studying techniques on the academic
performance of a STEM student

DESCRIPTION
This observation was done at Kidapawan City National High School, 12 STEM C
classroom and it was conducted on 3 consecutive days; October 7,8,9 2019. The participant in this
observation is Thea Allessandra Puri, a 17-year old female 12 STEM C student who is passionate
and hardworking when it comes to academics. A woman who has the eagerness to study despite
her hectic schedule. The observation was done through determining her studying techniques for
three consecutive days. On the first day, the observant took note of Thea’s studying techniques
and noted the result of it in her academic performance throughout the day. On the second day, the
observant noted the changes in her studying techniques. On the third day, the observant used the
observation from first and second day to spot the changes in her studying techniques and the result
of it in her academic performance.

RESULTS OF THE OBSERVATION

Date Study Techniques Results
October 7, 2019 Pre Test, Self Quizzing She forgot some information
from what she have studied
October 8, 2019 Self Quizzing, Paraphrasing Stronger memory for
and Reflecting numerous information since
there are only slight
information that were
forgotten.
October 9, 2019 Pre Test, Self Quizzing, Since, she used the three of
Paraphrasing and Reflecting her studying techniques, she
has retained in my mind all
the necessary information
from what she have studied.

The subject further said that she wasn’t able to remember all the information she have
studied by just using the two of her studying techniques. In order for the subject to remember all
the necessary information, she should use her three studying techniques.

INTERPRETATION AND ANALYSIS

Out of the three consecutive days of observation on the results of studying techniques on
the academic performance of a STEM students, the results point that studying techniques indeed
inflicts some changes on the result of the studying techniques on the academic performance of the
subject in school.

After using the Pre Test and Self Quizzing studying techniques of Thea, she wasn’t able to
remember some information. Pre Test, students practice answering questions even incorrectly,
before learning the content, their future learning is enhanced and in Self Quizzing encourages
students to make test questions for themselves as they learn a new concept, thinking about the
types of questions they might ask. In that case, she still hasn’t retained all of the information which
makes that studying technique combination the weakest of all.

After using the Self Quizzing and Paraphrasing and Reflecting techniques, her memory
works better than the first day since she used Paraphrasing and Reflecting technique which is the
easiest technique since it only make you remember only the most important word, meaning or
phrases. On the second day, there was just slightly forgotten information that makes this technique
combination better and stronger than the first one.
After using all the three of her studying techniques, she has retained in my mind all the
necessary information from what she has studied. She remembered all the contents she familiarized
and did best in her academic performance throughout that day.

The subject further stated that if she will just use two studying techniques, her memory
cannot retain all the information she have studied but when she uses the three of her techniques,
her brain retains all she have studied due to its times three power.

CONCLUSIONS AND RECOMMENDSATIONS

Based on the findings of the observation, it is concluded that one or two studying
techniques is not enough for your brain to function at its best. Findings shows that different
studying techniques has its different results, so you must choose or use the best technique that you
think you can benefit the best out of it. To be able for you to attain and remember all the contents
and information that you have studied, you must use three or more studying techniques for your
mind to retain it, for you to remember it fully, and to have your best academic performance as a
result.
