Sunflower Still Life - Jeff Legg

My first impression of the artwork is that the artist uses perfect

composition to create a harmonious still life. The artist uses vivid
bright colors as well as very dark colors, bringing in a contrast. The
bright yellow flowers are highlighted when against the dark
background, bringing attention to them. Attention is also captured with
the use of white highlights on the vase and cantaloupe. The dark
grapes are also highlighted against the white cloth on the table. The
artists use of shadow and white highlights gives the image a very real
look. The large pot is placed right in the center of the image, making it
the element that holds all the other pieces together in place.

The image is well balanced and soothing to the eye, the artist has used
only three sunflowers in the image but the three flowers are well
defined and artistically displayed, having strong characteristics. The
fruits bring life to the image and bring your attention to the beauty of
nature.

Sunflowers - Van Gogh

My fist impression of the artwork is that the artist uses a lot of

contrasts of yellow to paint the pleasant image, with the use of a very
few other colors. The artist places the flowers at the center of the
image, making it the subject matter. The artist showcases all the
different stages of the sunflower, from a young bud on the bottom left
to healthy beautiful looking sunflowers to ones whose petals have
fallen and are ready to seed. The image is not perfectly proportional as
the flowers face all different directions, and there is a lack of
uniformity. The image is not made to seem very real, the shape of the
pot and the stems suggest a more artistic representation of the
flowers. The image also seems quite busy as the artist uses many
flowers.

The image is simple but beautiful. The sharpness and the randomness
of the flower petals make the image a little less pleasing. There is
green in the image but only enough to hold the image together, there
are no elements of the painting that jump out at you, instead the
complexity of the flowers keeps you busy in admiration.
From the two,the ‘Sunflower Still Life’ by Jeff Legg comes out on top.
The bright subjects against the dark background really capture your
attention. The highlights provide realness and richness to the image
and make it an overall better composed image. The brightness of the
image by Van Gogh, and the color palette used by the artist is what
makes the image less real. Although painted very well, it lacks the
element of realism and proportion.
