Sunset Lino Print Reflection

By Sophie

Describe:

I am choosing to write this reflection on Rays of Hope, the fourth print in Sunset Series. This

print is a sunset scene. The sky at the top of the print is light yellow and orange. In the middle

of the print is a white sun with red sky around it. Just beneath the sun is a strip of dark land

from which stand five pine trees. The lake just below the land is red, then orange, and yellow at

the bottom, and there are little white squiggles for waves all throughout the water. In the

bottom right corner of the lake is a black loon. Elements of Design shown in this print are Color

and Space. Two Principles of Design that can be seen are Balance and Harmony. To create this

art piece, I carved out of a tile and spread ink on it with a roller. Then I placed it on paper and

pressed on the back with a spoon. I added layers of ink with different colors for it to look like a

sunset scene.

Analyze:

Color is a Principle of Design that can be seen in this art piece. The colors shown are red, yellow,

orange, white, and black. There are a variety of dark and bright colors used. Space is used in this

print because there is a large space filled with bright colors above the strip of land and anther

below. The land and trees are black and look almost like their shapes were chopped out of the
print, or like nothing is there, or no space is there. It looks like the colored places are full while

dark places are empty, creating an illusion of space. The print also is Balanced. The water and

sky look very similar. It is like the land is slicing the picture in half, and it is almost the same on

the top and bottom. This makes sense because the water is reflecting what is in the sky. Lastly,

Harmony is used in this piece. The repitition of the warm colors red, orange, and yellow make

the piece look harmonious because they are ananlogous and fit well together.

Interpret:

When I was looking at Rays of Hope, I felt like the message was about the importance of feeling

joyful, peaceful, and hopeful. I think that this was mostly due to the bright colors used, how

they are warm, and how they make you feel these things. When you see art with cool colors

like blue, purple, and green, it may make you have sadder feelings compared to when using

warm colors. Or, for example, what if I had made this sunset print blue and silver and called it

Icy Sunset? This would change the message of the piece. The message of joy, peace and hope is

also shown through how nature is used. It is a nature scene with water, sky, wildlife, and trees.

Nature can make you feel joy, hope, and especially peace. Now that I think about it, my art

piece makes me feel a lot like how I did when I looked at Maurice Sapiro’s art as inspiration for

this project. He also uses bright colors and nature and perhaps his art has the same messages as

mine.
Asses:

I think that the overall design of my piece appears harmonious because of the reasons listed

above in the Ananlyze section. This is one thing that I think was successful about my piece.

Another thing that was successful about, not the individual print Rays of Hope, but the series

was how I was able to experiment with different colors so they weren’t all the same and boring.

I’m also glad that lots of the colors look good together and how many of the shapes turned out

well. One thing that I would do differently is try to get smoother and better ink prints. Not all of

them were very good because I didn’t have enough time to get every single one exactly perfect,

especially the orange ink. I think I would also add more layers and detail to them because some

of them look plain. All of them have at least two layers, which are the background layer and the

black layer, but only a few have three layers. If I could repeat this assignment I would try to add

a few more layers like how I had planned at the start of the piece. The mark I think I should

receive on my Sunset Series Lino Prints is 86%. This is because they look good color-wise, but

the printing wasn’t as nice as it could be.
