Health and safety I
GRADE 11

Content Standard: The learners demonstrate an understanding of the underlying principle of PPE on
Construction worker.
Performance Standard: The learners can identify the proper use of PPE.
Learning Competencies: Select appropriate PPE for the job task.

I. Objectives
At the end of the period, the students is expected to:
1. Identify the types of PPE(Personal Protective Equipment) for construction worker
2. And Demonstrate proper use of PPE.

II. Subject Matter


A. Topic: types of PPE (Personal Protective Equipment)
B. Materials: PowerPoint presentation, marker, PPE, video clip, IM’s
C. Reference: health and safety by. OSHA pages 14-18.
D. Value focus: Appreciate the importance of PPE.

III. Procedures/ Development of the lesson

Motivation
(The teacher will play a video about work accident)

Presentation of Objectives
(Teacher will state the topic and the objective for today)

a. Activity:
The teacher will divide the student into 4 groups and will give those pictures of a man and PPE’s. The student
will attach the following PPE pictures to the picture of a man without PPE.
Criteria: 50% cooperation 50% neatness.
b. Analysis:
The teacher will ask the question that follows:
1. Who has any idea about PPE?
2. Who can identify the different types of PPE?
3. Why we need to know the different types of PPE?

c. Abstraction:
The teacher will discuss about the different types of PPE (Personal Protective Equipment) for construction
worker.

Prevention Is Better than Cure

Types of PPE:
Hard hat
Goggles
Face Mask
Safety shoes
Ear Muffs
Safety Harness
Head Protection • Well fitted hard hat • Date
Some do’s & don’ts
1. Make sure that the hat is adjusted to a snug but not tight fit.
2. Do not write or draw on the hat as this can weaken the protective surface
3. Check date to see if hard hat is too old.
4. Do not throw hats around, place them in a clean environment.
5. If you see the blue/white hat sign put your hat on! It’s the LAW!
Eye Protection
Goggles, not glasses Lenses always kept clean
Remember your eyes are a lifeline to work & leisure, try driving your precious car without them! It takes very
little to destroy them, a spark, a piece of metal or even cement dust could harm them. Prescription glasses offer
NO protection, in fact it could make things worse!
Ear Protection • Good quality ear muffs
Lung Protection • Good quality, fitting mask (face mask)
Foot Protection • Good quality, sturdy boots – steel capped • Always keep clean and polished • Oil-resistant
soles
Safety Harness – a form of PPE designed to protect a person from injury or damage. The harness is attachment
between a stationary and non-stationary object and usually fabricated from rope, cable or webbing and locking
hardware.
d. Application:
The teacher will flash a pictures of PPE and the students will answer if the worker if safe or not.
