PROBLEMS

1. A 230 volt shunt motor has an armature resistance of 0.26 ohm. Assuming a 2 volt brush
drop, calculate the counter emf when the armature is 35.4 amp.

Given:

Va = 230 volts

Ra = 0.26 Ω

Vb.c = 35.4 amp

Solution:

Let:

Ec = the counter emf of a motor

Vbc = brush contact losses

Va = impressed voltage across armature winding

Ra = armature resistance

Ia = armature current

If = shunt-field current

Since:

Ec = (Va – Vb.c) – IaRa

Ec = (230 -2) – (35.4)(0.26)

Ec = 218.8 volts
2. A 240 volt shunt motor has an armature resistance of 0.38 ohm. What current will flow
in the armature when the counter emf is 227.5 volts? (assume a 2 volt brush drop)

Given:

Va = 240 volts

Ra = 0.38 Ω

Ec = 227.5 volts

Vb.c = 2 volts

Solution:

By Ohm’s Law:

IaRa = (Va-Vb.c) –Ec

(𝑉𝑎−𝑉𝑏.𝑐)−𝐸𝑐
Ia = 𝑅𝑎

(240−2)−227.5
Ia = 0.38

Ia = 27.63 amp

3. In the problem 2, what is the total voltage drop in the armature circuit?

Solution:

Vdrop = the voltage drop in the armature circuit

Vdrop = IaRa + Vbrush contact

= (27.63) (0.38) + 2

Vdrop = 12.5 volts
