ISO is good for small businesses too. It just serves as the guidelines in operating a small
business effectively. It is up to the owner of the business to live up to the numerous paper
works or settle with the flexible yet dynamic approach in handling the work processes. Since it
is costly to be availed by the small business owners, it is rather practical to not to avail it but
rather have the employees undergo rigorous training so that the documentation and anything
related to it will be lessened and so that the productivity and the efficiency derived from the
training will also be a beneficial factor to the business in a form of discipline and lessening of
the committed mistakes in the processes.
Incorporating ISO’s standardization comes with a command that employees should also
do their part in the job documentation. It is according to the discretion of the owner on what
are they going to give to the employees. Besides, depending on the degree of difficulty of
documenting it, there’s also their work to deal with giving them already a handful of things to
accomplish in a given amount of time which is probably too demanding for the employees
leading them not to perform their utmost best when it comes to their performance in the
business.
Added documentation could be avoided if all you need to do is to answer and guide
them properly since there is already a direct communication between employer and the
employees. As a small business, one could begin with assigning 3 highly prioritized quality
objectives that are strictly obeyed to satisfy the connection between the business and the
customers.
Employees are regularly and frequently reminded of these until their focus is aligned to
what the strategic plan and objectives of the business wants to achieve. Management review
could be done once in a week, in a month or daily to ensure that the goals are being
remembered and if necessary, revisions will be made according to the needs of the situation in
order to adapt.
