Chapter I

A research study on the effects of social media in the academic performance of JHS and SHS
form Maligaya Trinity Baptist Christian Academy Inc.

Introduction:
Social media is the collective of online communications channels dedicated to community-
based input, interaction, content-sharing and collaboration. Other research has focused on the
role of social media and the reasons why people use Facebook through the uses and gratification
model. Among the reasons they found were for social interaction, professional advancement, and
entertainment. ( LaDuque, 2011)

Significance of Study:
This field of study is important because of sociability is underlying theme in using forms of
social media. Since this social media phenomenon is continuing to grow at the fast pace. It
important to understand the effects it has on personal communication. Social media network
offer for straightforward to way converse with peers and peer back, as well. Which may
influence the adult’s self with esteem individuals. For example, Facebook is use primally by
students to maintain the relationships with individual they are acquainted with who lives near
and far. Facebook makes it similar and communicate with multiple people at one time. Social
Media may also make it easier for users to monitors activities of people they have not seen in
while as well as reconnecting with new and old friends.

Research Questions:
The goal of this study was to know about the Social Media’s impact on High School students’
Academic Performances.
Specifically, this study aims to know the answer to the following questions:

: How much time students waste on Social Media?


: What are the effects of Social Media on the students?
: What are the benefits that can get in Social Media?
Scope and Delimitation:
The research was conducted at Maligaya Trinity Baptist Christian Academy Inc. This
study limit its coverage on the JHS and SHS from Maligaya Trinity Baptst Christian
Academy Inc. students second quarter final grade. The study focuses on the current JHS and
SHS from MTBCAI students of the present year S.Y 2018-2019.

DEFINITION OF TERMS
Effects- a change that results when something is done or happens : an event, condition, orstate of
affairs that is produced by a cause
First or 1st– coming before all others in time, order, or importance
Quarter- one of four equal parts of a year
Grades- a number or letter that indicates how a student performed in a class or on a test
Junior High School- A junior is a student in their third year of study (generally referring to high
school or college/university study) as coming immediately before their senior year.
Senior High School- covers the last two years of the K to 12 program and includes Grades 11
and 12.
Limitations of the Study:
The limitation of this study was that not been done regarding the impact of social media on
academic performance of the young generation. It was difficult to find a starting point to build on
as the majority of the studies conducted regarding the impact of social media was done either
high school students’ academic performance. Or the effects it causes psychologically and even
these were not conducted at Maligaya Trinity Baptist Christian Academy Inc. a third limitation
to this study was having a short – period of time to conduct the research. A result of this, is the
generalization of there being a relationship between the use of social media on the academic
performance of school students.
