To encourage strong leaders for the future, and to support the school’s AIP Goal
3, Deer Park West Primary School’s Peer Mediation program gives Year 5 and 6
students the training to deal with basic conflict resolution in the school yard.
After completing a full day’s training, successful students will be equipped with
high visibility vests and resources to assist with minor disruptions in the
playground. Yard duty teachers will continue to monitor ALL incidents, with
minor disruptions being supported by a pair of Peer Mediators.
Mediators are not only trained but will also work in pairs to support and
collaborate during conflict resolution. They will be provided with a script which
will assist when mediating between individuals and groups. Should the incident
become above their capability, they will then refer it onto one of the supervising
yard duty teachers.
Mediators will be rostered on for recess and lunch breaks for 15 minutes each,
Monday to Thursday.
Mr. Torpey and Ms. Arif will continually check-in with mediators and support
when necessary. Any major incidents or concerns will be referred onto
classroom teachers or school leadership. Below is the chain of command:
