Το 429 π.Χ.

Volume 19, Issue 1 May 1969 , pp. 160-162 The Errors in Plutarch, Nikias
6. Wesley E. Thompson (a1) Published online by Cambridge University
Press: 11 February 2009
Twice in this chapter, according to the commentators, Plutarch has
confused a pair of military engagements, Spartolos with Poteidaia and
Nikias' campaign in the Megarid during 427 with that of Demosthenes in
424. In both instances this view seems to me to be of doubtful validity. In
one case I would propose that instead of confusing two campaigns Plutarch
simply misunderstood a very difficult passage in Thucydides, while in the
second there is only flimsy evidence for rejecting Plutarch's version.
His statement that the Athenians under the command of Kalliades and
Xenophon were defeated in Thrace by the Chalkidians refers to the battle
of Spartolos (Thuc. 2. 79), but it has become a critical dogma that Plutarch
'gives Kalliades as the commander, clearly by confusion with Kallias son
of Kalliades',3 who led the Athenian forces at the battle of Poteidaia (Thuc.
1. 62–3). The only apparent reason for this view is the coincidence of the
names Kallias and Kalliades, but the frequent occurrence of these names
makes this coincidence of no significance.
2 . G., I, 242, 243, 244. In the year 436, Stageira, Stolos, Scione, Sermyle,
Mende, Torone, and Aphytis paid no tribute. The tribute of Potidaea was
raised from six talents in 438 to fifteen talents in 436. The tribute of
Spartolos was also raised during this period from two to three and one-
twelfth talents. In 437 about fifteen cities are found in the tribute lists for
the first time, which shows the activity of Athens in the Chalcidic region.

at Solygeia [4.44.6], and the 292 Lakedaimonians captured on Sphakteria
[4.38.5]) would strike even the casual reader as obviously unrounded; their
exceptional nature is merely confirmed. But it is useful to know which of
the less obviously unrounded figures are less rounded than most in their

The works of these three writers constituted the main sources for the
placement of ancient sites byRighas and the earlier European cartographers
in the region of central Macedonia, which we examine.
However, it is worth stressing that in the above-mentioned “herodotian” or
“ptolemaic”regions sometimes appear individual ancient cities that are not
mentioned in the works of the above writers, but in other texts of Greek or
Latin literature. So we see, for example, the cities of Vormiskos
(Vromiskos on Charta) and Aulon near Lake Volvi (fig. 7), which are
reported byThucydides (4.103), Spartolos (fig. 6), mentioned by
Thucydides (2.79), but also by lexicograe-Perimetron, Vol. 3, No. 3, 2008
[161-172] www.e-perimetron.org | ISSN 1790-3769[166]phers of later
antiquity3, as also Anthemous (fig. 7) (Harpocration, Stephanos Byzantios,
Hesychios,s.v. Spartolos, Anthemous), the city of Volvi (fig. 7), that is
reported by Aelius Herodianus(De prosodia catholica 3.1.107) and
Stephanos Byzantios, the city of Cassera in northern Athos
(fig. 7), that is known only from Pliny’s text (N.H. 4.38), as well as
Tauriana, Acerdus and Melissourgis(fig. 3), which are mentioned in the
roman itineraries of the 4th century.
How “reliable” are the placements of the sites on Charta? The question that
emerges now has to do with the reliability of the placement of the cities on
Charta, so that we could hope for a help in the search of unidentified cities
on the real map, for example after the process of a similarity transformation
best fitting of the Charta onto the actual map5. A way to answer this
question is to examine how exact are the known cities placed by Righas.
The result of such an examination is not particularly encouraging. Even if
most of these cities appear to be placed correctly, many of them are not.
We notice that Righas, who often mentions the ancient name of a city with
its new one, identifies, for example, Giannitsa with ancient Spartolos (fig.
6), although Spartolos (Thuc. 2.79) was situated in Chalkidiki (perhaps
near Nea Syllata. See Hansen – Nielsen 2004: 843-844-P. Flensted-
Jensen), while the older name of Giannitsa was Vardari. Also,
Ouranoupolis (fig. 7) is marked in the southern instead of the northern
Athos, Anthemous (fig. 7) to the north of Thessaloniki and not to its
south, while even Naoussa (fig. 6) that existed in Righas’ times, is
marked to the south of Beroea, although, of course, it is situated to its
north.

seems at least odd that casualties from two different encounters separated
by three years would have been recorded together.17 Either, then, the new

it.18 Or, what I consider to be more likely, the two battles were fought in
the same year (429 or 426), in which case either Tanagra or Spartolos…

In the historical era, the settlement, whose core was on the trapeza of Agios
Konstantinos8, belonged within the borders of ancient Krousis, whose
towns participated in Cassander’s synoecism of Thessaloniki. A fair
number of the names of the scattered villages in the region were already
known from Herodotus (7.123), Thucydides (1.61), and other later
historical and epigraphic sources, a number of which have been identified
with certainty or some probability: Lipaxos, Kombreia, Lisai, Gigonos,
Kampsa, Smila, Tinde, Aineia (at Nea Michaniona), Beroia/Brea (at
Veria), Spartolos (at Nea Silata), Dikaia (perhaps at Nea Kallikratia), and
others. Later, Antigoneia, which developed into an important center, was
founded in the same region, probably by Antigonos Gonatas9. The ancient
name of the settlement at Mesimeri is still unknown.

walls have been located – the northern approximately 400 metres from the
isthmus and the southern about two kilometres from it. The wall
incorporated a huge area, including the former Poteidaia and the Archaic
and Classical cemeteries.
Because of its strategic position, Kassandreia was to become one of the
most
prosperous cities of Hellenistic Macedonia, as is suggested by the finds of
the excavations.
A Macedonian tomb dating to about 300 BC and other simpler graves
belonging
to members of the same prominent Macedonian family were discovered at
Petriotika,
not far from the southern wall of the city. The Macedonian tomb was found
looted, but
it preserved two magnificent marble klinai (couches) with painted
decoration, which
most probably supported two ash-containers and other grave-goods. The
klinai imitate
wooden ones decorated with ivory and gold. Also, important cist-graves
with wall paintings
and rich grave-goods have been discovered in the area of Agios Mamas (in
the
vicinity of Kassandreia). Further away, a Macedonian tomb was excavated
at Solenas,
south of Kallithea. The mound and tomb were totally destroyed, but the
foundation of
the walls indicates its plan. The tomb was small with just one room, and
remains of two
marble klinai recall those from Poteidaia. The tomb probably dates to the
late fourth
century BC.
The second area was Vottiki (Βοττική - Thuc. 1.65.2) to the east of Krousis.
The
name derived from the ethnic Βοττιαῖος (Hdt. 8.127). When the
Macedonians conquered
Vottiaia in central Macedonia sometime in the seventh century BC (Hdt.
8.127;
Thuc. 2.99.3), they expelled its inhabitants who resettled in the central part
of the

the Vottiaians.
Thucydides informs us that in his times Spartolos was their main polis.114
There were approximately between six and twelve Vottiaian poleis
(Aioleion, Kalindoia, Kamakai, Kithas, Pleumi, Prassilos, Sinos,
Spartolos, Tindi, Tripioai). It is also interesting that Herodotus (8.127)
includes also Olynthos among the originally Vottiaian communication…
Abstract
Summary. — The silver and bronze coins of the Bottiaeans depicting a
head of Demeter on the obverse and a bull on the
reverse had been attributed to the Bottiaean cities of North Bottike that had
formed a separate federal state from 422 to ca. 370
The Bottiaean cities of South Bottike and Crousis, like Spartolos and
Sinos, remained allies of the Chalcideans during the
last decades of the 5th century and became members of the Chalcidean
League during the IVth century ВС. Their bronze
issues with chalcidean types date from this period.
