Design Load of the Structure

Roof Structure
Dead Load = 0.5 KN/m2
Imposed load = 0.25 KN/m2
First floor
Dead Load of slab(125mm) = 3.0 KN/m2
Dead Load of finishing = 0.5 KN/m2
= 3.5 KN/m2
Imposed load = 3.0 KN/m2

Wall materials - 20KN/m3

Q1. Evaluate the characteristic dead and live loads acting on the internal wall
P-Q in the first floor level.
Effective Load width from each side = 1.65 m
Roof dead load on PQ W1, W2 = 1.65*0.5
= 0.825 kN/m

Self weight of Wall PQ at second floor W3 = 0.24*4.4*20

= 21.12 kN/m

Self weight of Wall PQ at First floor W6 = 0.24*2.875*20

= 13.8 kN/m

Self weight of First floor slab on PQ W4, W5= 3.5*1.65

= 5.775 kN/m

characteristic dead load on Wall PQ = 0.825*2+21.12+13.8+ 2*5.775

= 48.12 kN/m

Roof Impose load on PQ W1, W2 = 1.65*0.25

= 0.4125 kN/m

First floor slab Impose load on PQ W4,W5 = 1.65*3

= 4.95 kN/m

characteristic imposed load on Wall PQ = 0.4125*2+4.95*2

= 10.725 kN/m

Q II) Find the different load combinations and corresponding design loads
and eccentricities
Maximum Load = 1.4 Gk+1.6 Qk
Minimum Load = 0.9 Gk
Ecentricity ex = t/3 (Wi max- W i min)/ WR

Load Gk Qk WMax WMin LC1 LC2

W1 0.825 0.4125 1.815 0.7425 1.815 0.7425
W2 0.825 0.4125 1.815 0.7425 1.815 1.815
W3 21.12 0 29.57 19.008 29.568 29.568
W4 5.775 4.95 16.01 5.1975 16.005 5.1975
W5 5.775 4.95 16.01 5.1975 16.005 16.005
34.320 10.725 65.208 53.328
Since symetrical of the Building it can be considered maximum load at one
side (imposed load+ Dead) and other side having only the Dead Load.

LC1 Load Combination1 : Fully Loaded to ultimate limit

= 1.4 Gk+1.6 Qk
= 1.4*34.32+1.6*10.725
= 65.208 kN/m
ex = 0

LC 2Load Combination2 : Fully Loaded left side and right side with minimum load
= 53.328 kN/m

ex = 240/3*(65.208-53.328)/53.328
17.822 mm

Q.iii) Determine the slenderness ratio of the wall and compare with its
permissible value.
By considering the full restrian of the wall from slab and floor
hef = 0.75 h = .75*(3000-125)
= 2.1563 m
teff = 0.24-0.03 = 0.21 m

Slenderness ratio = heff /t eff

= 10.268
<27, allowable slenderness ratio.
Thus wall is safe on lateral buckling

Q. iv) Check whether the internal wall at the ground floor level is able
to carry the design compressive load considering vertical load
resistance of the wall.
Total design load on wall at Ground floor = 65.208+1.4*13.8
= 84.53 kN/m

Vertical load resistance of wall = b t fk/γm

BS 5628 ex = 17.8 ex/t = 0.0742
Table 7 Thus from table 4.8 b = 0.922
Table 2 fk = 2.2
Table 4 γm = 3.5

Vertical load resistance of wall = 0.922*210*2.2/3.5

= 121.7 kN/m
So brick vertical resistence is greater than applied load of
84.53kN/m at ground level. So wall is ok

Q.v) Draw a figure showing boundary condition for the external

wall panel X-Y (first floor to roof office area)

Q vi.) Determine the moment parallel and perpendicular to the bed

joint if it is subjected a inward lateral load of 3.0 kN/m2.

Table 3 Orthogonally ratio (µ) = fkx par/Fkx per mortar designation iv

= 0.25/0.8
= 0.3125

Table 8 h/L = 3/5 = 0.6

Bending moment coeficient α= 0.0368 restrain consider as wall xy
Load Factor γf = 1.2
2
Bending Moment Parallel to the joint = µ*α*wk*γf*L
= 0.3125*0.0368*3*1.2*5^2
= 1.035 kNm
2
Bending Moment Normal to the joint = α*wk*γf*L
= 0.0368*3*1.2*5^2
= 3.312 kNm

Q Vii.) Check the safety of the external wall panel under the given wind load
considering flexural and shear criteria
Bending capacity // joint = fckparallel *Z/rm
γm = 3.5
= 0.25*1000*1*0.32^2/(6*3.5)
= 1.219 kNm > 1.035
Applied joint moment< Bending capacity of panel so section is ok

Bending capacity perpendiculat joint = fckper *Z/rm

0 γm = 3
= 0.8*1000*1*0.32^2/(6*3.5)
= 3.901 kNm > 3.312
Applied joint moment< Bending capacity of panel so section is ok

Check for shear

Applied Shear = 3*3/320 = 0.0281 N/mm2 at Base

For external wall ga = (3.3*0.5+1)*(1.4*0.5+1.6*0.25)+0.34*3*20*1.4

= 31.475 kN/m

for mortar designation iv fv = 0.15+0.6ga <1.4

= 0.15+31.475*0.6/320
= 0.209 N/mm2 > 0.028
Thus 350mm Thk wall is ok.
