8.0 Screens:
8.1 Intensifying screens made of led should be used.

9.0 Surface Preparation:

9.1 The weld surface irregularities on the inside (where accessible) and outside surface should be
removed by any suitable process such that the indication of discontinuity is neither masked nor
confused with surface irregularities on radiograph.

reasonability uniform crowns, with reinforcement no to exceed that specified in the reference.

10.0 Identifications System:

10.1 Each Radiographs shall be identifiable as to job no., weld seam no., date of radiograph,

that their images appear as radiographic on radiographs providing evidence of coverage.
Location marker shall not be placed upon the exposure holder. Their location shall
be permanently marked on the surface of part being radiograph if permitted or on a map
so that the area of interest on radiograph is traceable accurately to its location on the part for
the required retention period of radiograph. Location markers should be placed either on source

13.0 Technique:

13.1 Single Wall Single Image (SWSI): In the single wall technique, the radiation passes
through only one wall of weld material, which is viewed for acceptance on the radiograph.

13.2 Double Wall Technique: when it is not practical to use a single wall technique, one of
the following double-wall technique shall be used.

13.2.1 Double Wall Single Image (DWSI):

Radiation pass through the two walls and the image of the further weld on film side
is viewed for acceptance. when complete coverage is required of circumferential
welds, a minimum of three exposure shall be taken 120 º to each other.

13.2.2 Double Wall Viewing (DWDI):

For materials and welds in components 31/2 in(89mm) or less in nominal outside
diameter, a technique may be used in which Radiation pass through the two walls
and the weld material in both walls is viewed for acceptance on the same
radiograph. For weld , the radiation may be offset from the plane of weld at an angle
sufficient to separate the image of source side and film side areas of weld such that
there is no overlap of areas to be taken 90º to each other for each joint.

As an alternative, the weld may be radio graphed with the radiation beam positioned
so that the image of both walls are superimposed. When complete coverage is
required , a minimum of three exposures taken at either 60º or 120º to each other
shall be made for each joint.

14.0 Image Quality Indicator (IQI):

14.1 IQI shall be either hole or wire-type conforming to the specification SE-1025
for hole type and SE-747 for wire-type.
14.2 IQI shall be selected from either the same alloy material group or grade as identified in
SE-1025 or SE-747, as applicable or from an alloy material group or grade with less
radiation absorption than the material being radiograph.
14.3 IQI selection shall be as per Table 3. A thinner or thicker hole type IQI may be substituted
for any section thickness listed in Table 3 provided and equipment IQI sensitivity is
maintained as given in Table 4.
14.4 Welds with reinforcement: Selection of IQI shall be based on the nominal single wall
material thickness plus the actual weld reinforcement thickness estimated to be present
on the both side of weld (ID & OD). The values used for estimated weld reinforcement
of actual weld reinforcement is not required. Backing ring or strip shall not be
considered as part of thickness of IQI.
14.5 Welds without reinforcement: Selection of IQI shall be based on the nominal single wall
thickness. Backing strip are excluded.

14.6 Welds jointing dissimilar materials or welds with dissimilar filler metal: When the
weld metal is of an alloy group or grade with a radiation attenuation different from base
material, the IQI material selection shall be based on the weld metal and be in accordance
with para 14.2. When the density limits as specified in para 19.4 cannot be met with one
IQI, and the exceptional densities are at the interface of weld metal and the base metal,
the material selection for additional IQI shall be based on the base material and in
accordance with para 14.2.

15.0 Placement of IQI:

15.1 A source side IQI of the thickness shown in Table 3, as may be applicable shall be
placed on the side nearest the radiation source (i.e. source side of the object).
Where it is impractical to hand place the IQI on the source side, a film side IQI from
Table-3, as may be applicable, shall be placed on the film side of the object, and a lead
“F” as high as the IQI identification number shall be placed adjacent to or on the IQI
but shall not mask the essential hole of the IQI, where hole type IQI are used.

15.2 When, due to part or weld configuration or size of the object prevents placing the IQI as
described above, it may be placed on a separate block. Separate block shall be
made of the same or radiographically similar material (as defined in SE-1025) and
may be used to facilitate IQI positioning. There is no restriction on the separate block
thickness provided the IQI/area of interest density tolerance requirements of Para 19.0

i) The IQI on the source side of the separate block shall be placed no closer to the film
than the source side of the part being radiograph.

ii) The separate block shall be placed as close as possible to the part being radiograph.

a) Hole Type IQI location for welds: The IQI shall be placed adjacent to the weld or on the
weld such that 2T hole is towards the end of the spot to be radiograph. The identification
numbers and film side indicator lead letter “F” when used shall not be in the area of interest,
except when geometric configuration makes it impractical to place the IQI, the lead numbers
and the lead letter “F” may be placed in the area of interest.

b) Wire Type location for welds: The IQI shall be placed on the weld with the length of
wires perpendicular to axis of weld & thinner wire towards the end of the spot to be
