FORMATIVE ASSESSMENT TASK 2: REPORT

STUDENT INSTRUCTION
Assessment Task 2 is based on an Article “Leadership Challenges at Hewlett-Packard: Through the Looking Glass”
(Larcker & Tayan, 2011). In this Assessment Task 2, you are required to make a project report on Organizational
development through strategic management, taking form the Hewlett-Packard.

Considering yourself as the CEO of HP, explain how you would lead in a transformational manner by modelling and
cultivating collaborative thinking. You are required to provide the understanding of how leaderships have changed during
different tenures of the CEOs for organizational change and development. In addition, you are also required to provide
your personal judgment as to what was right and what was wrong in their leadership strategies for transformation.

To complete this task student would be given a week’s time.

There is no particular format for the report, however, it must include the following:
1. Executive Summary:
It is a summary containing all the main findings and conclusions, so that a busy executive can get a flavour of
what the report says and decide whether or not s/he needs to read it all. It is not to be confused with the
Introduction.
2. Introduction:
This sets the scene for what is to follow. It should contain a brief (1-2 paragraphs) summary of the events which
have led to the report being written, the terms of reference or objective of the report
3. Analysis:
You have to provide a detailed explanation to the following:
a. Analysis of the firm’s changing environment
b. Legislation, information and intelligence sources that can be used to evaluate opportunities
c. Capacity and competence of individuals and groups to respond and contribute to the changes
d. Barriers to the introduction of changes in the organisation
e. Impact of role of leadership during the introduction of change
4. Your role as CEO in the organisation
You have to explain how you will lead effectively to bring about transformation by pursuing collaborative
thinking by answering the following questions
a. What transformational and transactional practices can be undertaken?
b. In what ways will you empathise in day to day leadership in the company by integrating own emotions
with cognitions?
c. How can work based relationships be managed and lead consistently while respecting individual
differences?
d. How can personal leadership style, disruptive emotions and impulses be evaluated, monitored and
regulated?
5. Recommendation and implementation
You have to consider various alternatives. There is hardly ever just one, single "obvious" response to a strategic
problem. And bear in mind that, if there is, all the company’s competitors will have thought of it, too!

You have to make it clear why the recommendation you have chosen is the best of the available alternatives. That
means showing what is wrong with the others!
a. Communication strategies and learning solutions to address problems and risks of individuals during the
process of organisational change
b. Leadership Approaches to respond to the impact of change on people and processes
c. Most effective strategic leadership style for successful implementation of change
6. Page number: Make sure that the pages are numbered along with the sections. This can help you make cross-
references from one part to another, which can help save you words by avoiding repeating in one place what you
have already said.
7. Reference: Make sure to provide all your references. If you are directly quoting someone make sure to put those
sentences in inverted commas and quote them properly.
8. Table of Content: You report should have table of content.
Satisfactory Completion
To successfully complete the assessment, you should have a thorough knowledge of
‘Lead personal and strategic transformation’
Where a student does not achieve satisfactory completion, the Assessor will assess re-submission (maximum of two re-
submissions only) of assessment work to gain the required outcome.
