Activity #2: Relate at least 5 incidents in Rizal's Life to illustrate each of these characters traits.

Self-discipline

Rizal always practiced self-discipline wherever he is. When he was in Biñan,

waking up at four o’clock to hear mass if there was any is a part of his daily

life, otherwise he study his lessons at that hour and went to mass afterwards.

Having self-discipline makes Jose Rizal as a best student. While he was out of

the country, he kept himself in physical trim by daily exercises and practiced

speaking German, French, and Italian. Aside from perfecting his academic

studies, he performed daily exercises in Berlin gymnasium to develop his body.

Man of Dignity

Rizal resents exhibition of Igorots in Madrid Exposition. Primitive Igorots

were exhibited in this exposition, some of whom died, and whose scanty
clothing (G-strings) and crude weapons were objects of mockery and laughter
by the Spanish people and press. Being a champion of human dignity, Rizal
was outraged by this degradation of his fellow countrymen the Igorots of
Northern Luzon.

An anecdote related by Manuel Xeres Burgos illustrates Rizal’s

predilection to help the helpless at the risk of his own life. One Thursday
afternoon, being vacation day, the boys flew their kites from the azotea. Young
Rizal then was busy reading a Spanish book of fables at the window. After a
while he heard Julio Meliza from Iloilo, one of the smallest boarders, crying –
because his kite, was caught by the vines growing on the belfry of the Manila
cathedral which was near the boarding house-house. The bigger boys were
laughing, making fun of Julio’s misfortune. Rizal closed the book he was
reading and told Julio not to cry, for he would try to retrieve the kite. True to
his promise he courageously climbed the high cathedral tower and successfully
recovered the kite.

Forgiving

An incident of Rizal’s schooldays in the Ateneo which reveals the hero’s

resignation to forgiveness. One day, many Ateneans, including Rizal, were
studying their lessons at the study hall. Two Ateneans, Manzano and Lesaca,
quarreled and violently hurled books at each other. Rizal, who was busy at his
desk poring over his lessons, was hit in the face by one of the thrown books. He
did not raise a cry or protest, although his wounded face was bleeding. After
the incident, he continued to attend his classes, feeling neither bitterness nor
rancor towards the guilty party.
Book lover

Since early childhood, Rizal liked to read. Rizal economized on his living
expenses, and with the money he saved, he purchased books from a second-
hand book store. He was able to build a fair-sized private library. The first
favorite novel of Rizal was “The Count of Monte Cristo”. On time, he persuaded
his father to buy him a costly set of Cesar Cantu’s historical work entitled
“Universal History”. He also read “Travels in the Philippines”.

Katipunan's headquarters in March 1897, delegates elected Aguinaldo president and demoted

Bonifacio to the post of director of the interior. Bonifacio withdrew with his supporters and

his cabin. The Minister of Colonies had sent Governor Blanco a telegram, which read: "Not

advisable that Rizal go to Cuba. He should be watched." Thereafter the friars exerted pressure

on the authorities, particularly Governor Blanco, to be strict on Rizal. Worse, Rizal's name kept

cropping up in the investigations of those arrested in connection with the Revolutionn. He was,

therefore, suspected of being the Revolution's secret leader. When the Isla de Panay reached

Barcelona on October 6, Dr. Rizal was immediately transferred to the prison Montjuich Castle,

the officer in charge of which was General Eulogio Despujol, the governor who had him arrested

and deported to Dapitan.

I THINK IT WAS A LEGAL ARREST BECAUSE THERE WAS A BASIS WHY SPANIARDS

ARREST HIM BECAUSE OF THREE REASONS :

The spanish colonial government accused Rizal of three crimes:

The founding of La Liga Filipina, an “illegal organization”

Whose single aim was to “Perpetrate the crime of rebellion”.

Rebellion which he promoted through his previous activities.

illegal association

1. What was the significance of Rizal's death to the Filipino people before and today?
-December 30 is significant dates to the Filipinos and should be remembered and

celebrated by the Filipinos for his martyrdom, symbolizing his great love for country, the

reason he gave up his life.

2. Did Rizal retract from being a Mason?

- No The Masonic Life of Dr. Jose Rizal,” Rizal was not only a mason, he was the only one

among the leaders of the revolutionary movement during the Spanish era who “deserved to be

called an international Mason since he was a member of various Masonic lodges in Spain,

Germany, France and possibly, England.”

3. Was the retraction of Rizal true or fake? Explain your answer.

- I Thinks Rizal`s Retraction was true because in the documents of the Spanish spies

called cuerpo de vilancia find the report written on the day of rizal's death written by

federico moreno detailing the statement of a guard in the cell an additional eye witness

account according to the statement wrote rizal of a paper he heard of the retraction also

two other men juan fresno and maure their names match the two signatures found in the

document of the witness stand.

longer a Mason but a true Catholic? Support your answer.

Rizal was not mason anymore after he received mass and holy communion because in Rizal`s

retraction letter he said I believe and I confess what ever she teaches and I submit to whatever
she demands I abominate masonry as the enemy which is of ther church and as a society

prohibited by the church

5. Why was Rizal unable to marry Josephine in church?

Doña Teodora, Rizal's mother, permitted her son to marry Josephine, but Fr Antonio Obach of

Dapitan refused to marry them without a special dispensation from the Bishop of Cebu.

Because Rizal was a Mason and Josephine was a Roman Catholic, a dispensation was not

given.

6. Why was Rizal's lawyer-defender a Spaniard and not a Filipino?

Instead of a civilian lawyer, only an army officer is allowed to defend Rizal.Although given with

“privilege” to choose his own defense counsel, this was limited to a list of 100 names – both first

and second lieutenants - that the Spanish authorities provided him. Of the list, one familiar

name stood out – Lt. Luis Taviel de Andrade. Rizal discovered that the said lieutenant was the

brother of Lt. Jose Taviel de Andrade who worked as Rizal's personal body guard in Calamba in

1887.
