1. How did Rizal view the role of an educated individual in society?

Answer: Rizal always considered education as a medicine or something that could
cure the problems of Colonial Philippines. He believed in education that is free
from political and religious control. He asserted that reform cannot be achieved if
there is no suitable education, a liberal one available to Filipinos. For Rizal, the
mission of education is to elevate the country to the highest seat of glory and to
develop the people's mentality. Since education is the foundation of society and a
prerequisite for social progress, Rizal claimed that only through education could
the country be saved from domination.

2. Aside from the works mentioned in the discussion, what other works of Rizal
mentioned or showed the importance of education?
Answer: For Dr. José Rizal, the well-respected national hero of the Philippines,
“the pen is mightier than the sword.” Through his literary masterpieces, he voiced
strong opposition to the abuse of Spaniards and conveyed messages that he hoped
would inspire his fellow countrymen. We round up his best works and uncover the
underlying meaning behind them.

3. From the 1860's to the 1890's intellectuals were tagged as destabilizers by the
colonial government. In your opinion, why were the intellectuals, such as Padre Jose
Burgos and the ilustrados, became the favorite target of repressive regimes?
Answer: One thing that a repressive or oppressive ruler wants is to control and
subjugate people through a lack of education. People who lack education are
people who are easy to control and manipulate. They are People who become
gullible, meaning, easy to believe in anything said. They lack in knowledge,
intelligence, and wisdom to think for themselves. Intellectuals are threats to
repressive and oppressive rules because they can enlighten people under their
rulership. They can educate ignorant people and understand the truth of their
situation.
