Experiment No. 4
Start-Stop Operation of a Three-Phase Induction Motor
Objectives:
To be able to identify the electrical symbols and the corresponding operations of the different
equipment/accessories in the overall Start-Stop Operation of a Three-Phase Induction Motor.
Circuit Diagram:
Operation:
When start button is pressed, current will start flowing in the system, energizing relay coil.
The contactor and relay switch will start to close, then the current will flow continuously and the motor
will start to run.
If stop button is pressed, the current will stop flowing which will disconnect the relay coil.
Then the motor will stop to run as the contactor and relay switch is open.
Components
Stop button is normally closed, so that current will flow continuously and when it is pressed both
switches will start to open that will causes the motor to stop.
Start button is normally open, so that no current will flow unless it is pressed.
Contactor switch is a relay used to switch current to an electric motor.
Relay coil is where the current flow going to the contactor switch.
Relay switch is used to control the current that will passes through the system.
Overload protective device is a protection against excessive current that will flow through the system.
Reflection:
It was interesting, relays were not new to me since we have a mechatronics class which involves more on
basic electronics. While I’m doing this activity, I learned more on about the functions and uses of relays and
its types which I can apply these learnings into my future works.
