Questions to be answered
1.Write a sentence justifying how the organization is related to your
branch expertise.
2.What are the salient features of the ecological / environmental /
sustainability / green policies (as stated in brochures, web-pages,
news stories) related to the organization?
3.Describe one product/service that may cause a significant impact
on the environment directly/indirectly.
4.Would you be learning about any of these features in one of your
courses (for this answer, list the name of courses and state how
the feature is connected to the course content)?
5.Critique* the policies. Each of the critical point that you state,
indicate whether the point is based on your reading of policy as a

Holt et al have commented about the importance of coast [2]:

Shelf and coastal seas play an important but largely unquantified

role in the Earth system. Their important role is due to their
exceptionally high biological productivity and close interaction with
human activity.

Acknowledging the source of the idea:

India has a very large coastline. The intense biological activity in

the coasts and the impact of human activity have to considered to
study the health of coastal areas [2].

Google
SALIENT FEATURES :
Google is creating a better web that is better for
environment. They are using their resources and supporting
renewable power.
They are investing in clean energy. They're going beyond carbon
neutral by committing over $1 billion to renewable energy projects
[1].
Google has been recognized to using and investing in renewable
power and co-founded the Climate Savers Computing Initiative in
2007 and joined The Green Grid-two global groups dedicated to
higher efficiency and sustainability standards.
Their data centers use only 50% of the energy of most other data
centers.Google uses very little of the world's electricity (less than
0.01%).They're currently using renewable energy to power over
34% of their operations [2]. ID1200, Jan-May 2016, IIT Madras
Google
RELATION TO PROFESSIONAL LEARNING :
CS3200 :- COMPUTER NETWORKS, CS6847 :-
CLOUD COMPUTING.
In these courses we will learn about cloud computing which
maximizes the use of computing powers thus reducing
environmental damage .
CS2800, CS5800 :- DATA STRUCTURES AND
ALGORITHMS
Here we learn to produce better algorithms which consume
less resources like power, hardware and thus indirectly reduce
the amount of carbon footprint of the company we work in.

Google
CRITIQUE :
Though google says that it is implementing a lot of policies for controlling it's
pollution there are still some places where it needs to take care of.
Google emits 1.5 m tonnes of carbon annually which was revealed from its
carbon footprint.[3]
According to researchers, a typical search generates about 7g of CO2 while
boiling a kettle generates about 15g.[4]
Google servers uses just about the same amount of energy that your
body(an average adult) burns in one day from food in ten seconds i.e
around 3000KJ.[5]
When compared to the other companies the policies followed and steps
taken by google are more effective like green power, being carbon neutral
etc.
Google is not only a software company but also produces several products
like google glasses, google fibre etc. whose manufacture also causes
pollution.

environment.

Vedanta
Critique:
The policy nurturing people is very useful as it helps people to think before
they agree to the instructions and norms of the organisation-professional
In the policy health and saftey "a subject matter of continuous improvement"
is really a good decision-citizen
Better to provide masks to those who are working near the areas of
gaseous emissions, inoder to minimise the risk and fear of the people-
citizen
Use of landfills to dump the solid waste will be very effective in compared to
just using geotextiles - professional
There is no proper and sufficient time given for servicing the machinary, as
the organisation rushes for bulk productions which may be dangerous
(explosion of boilers) - citizen [4]
The properties of the soil should be studied thoroughly in all climatic
conditions and care should be taken that the foundations are capable of
withstanding the loads (collapisng of chimney) - professional [5]

1.How the organisation is related to our branch
expertise.
Airbus, a leading aircraft manufacturing company,
implements knowledge of radar cross section, fluid
mechanics, aerodynamics, control engineering,
structural engineering, avionics materials
engineering and propulsion engineering more
closely related to aerospace engineering than any
other branch.

2.Salient Features
The environmental reporting process is embedded across Airbus’ global operations, measuring
progress and complying with reporting obligations. Since 2010, such consolidated data has been
externally audited by London-based multinational professional services firm Ernst &Young.
For its aircraft product line, Airbus continues to work on quieter and more fuel-efficient jetliners. Its
A380 is a benchmark for fuel efficiency and low noise levels, and such new-generation jetliners as
the A350 XWB and A320neo are pushing this envelope even further.
Airbus fully supports the Advisory Council for Aeronautics Research in Europe’s long-term vision
to reduce air transport CO2 emissions up to 50 per cent by 2050 (compared to 2005)
Historically, noise has been a major environmental issue for people living close to airports, and it
remains high on the agenda of public concern – with the focus mainly on aircraft operations.
Airbus works closely with partners across the industry to reduce the impact of noise of its aircraft
in operations. Noise standards for aircraft are set by ICAO (International Civil Aviation
Organisation) and all Airbus aircraft are well within the current limits set.
ICAO has also developed a “Balanced Approach to Airport Noise Management” using the following
aspects: reduction of noise at source; operational procedures; land use planning and operational
restrictions.
Airbus and its Tarmac Aerosave joint venture use a proven method for dismantling and recycling
the entire product range of Airbus aircraft in an environmentally and financially viable way. Up to
90 per cent of the aircraft are reused or recycled. With the Tarmac Aerosave platform, Airbus and
its partners have established a dedicated centre at Tarbes airport in France and Teruel Airport in
Spain – where aircraft are industrially decommissioned, dismantled and recycled in safe and
environmentally responsible conditions.

3.Product/Service that has a significant impact on the
environment directly/indirectly
Aircraft engines emit heat, noise, particulates and gases which
contribute to climate change and global dimming .The increase in air
traffic has contributed much to the increasing air contamination despite
the eco-friendly changes to the structure and propulsion. Increasing air
traffic also increases the chances of more birds getting killed by the
propellers.
4.Branch Courses
AS5020(Aerospace Propulsion) : Eco-friendly fuel promotion
AS3270 (Propulsion) : Eco-friendly fuel promotion
AS6340(Combustion and Flow diagnostics) : Treating the ejected
gases to reduce its harmful effects and also
development/implementation of proper techniques to get maximum
fuel efficiency.
AS5101(Aerodynamics and Aircraft performance)
ID1200, Jan-May 2016, IIT Madras

5.Critique
Airbus faces a lot of challenges in becoming environment-friendly and
realising sustainable developement
The propulsion engines designed and developed in Airbus R&D department
are not very fuel efficient.
The increased size of the commercial planes also puts at risk the lives of
birds. Airbus' planes' BASH(Bird Aircraft Strike Hazard) accounts for nearly
Airbus has taken a lot of policy decisions to reduce its carbon
footprint,noise, damage to wildlife etc
Airbus has committed to the "Flightpath 2050", an aviation industry plan to
reduce noise, CO2, and NOx emissions.
Airbus has joined Honeywell and JetBlue in an effort to reduce pollution and
dependence on oil
Alternative fuel was able to work properly in Airbus' aeroplane engine,
demonstrating that alternative fuels should not require new aeroplane
engines. This flight and the company's long-term efforts are considered big
strides towards environmentally friendly aeroplanes.
