Spring 2020
Teachers who are new to the profession have typically not had any exposure to Google
Classroom. If they have experience with Classroom, it is more often than not in their role as a
parent, viewing their own children’s work in the app. Therefore, the teachers I’m instructing
have either no Google Classroom knowledge, or have only seen Classroom from the student side
of the interface. Fortunately, the teachers often have working knowledge of some of the G Suite
applications, such as Docs, Slides, and Sheets, and being familiar with complimentary software
is helpful. My face to face staff development will provide an introduction to Google Classroom,
which is the Learning Management System our district uses, and they will be expected to utilize.
Learner Analysis
The teachers I’m instructing are first year alternative pathways educators, and will be
expected to have a working knowledge of all the G Suite for Education applications, including
Classroom. Many of the learners will have prior experience with other G Suite products, but not
Classroom. In this specific cohort, 8 teachers have begun using Classroom, but in a limited
manner.
There are 32 teachers in the first year alternative pathways cohort. The teachers consist
of middle and high school instructors. Nineteen of the teachers are high school level and 13 of
Task Analysis
The type of task analysis I will be performing is a procedural analysis. In our district,
teachers need to be able to use Google Classroom as their learning management system. In an
online, asynchronous environment, the teacher must be able to follow simple directions to
accomplish this task. Though they will not necessarily be in the presence of a Subject Matter
Expert, materials can be provided so that guidance from the expert will still be available.
For this task, I will serve as my own Subject Matter Expert (SME). I am qualified to
serve in this capacity as I am a Google Certified Educator and have many years of Google
Assessments
There are two brief assessments that can be utilized to determine if the students have met
the instructional objective of this activity. The first is a discussion board upon which learners
discuss the processes involved in creating and utilizing Google Classroom. It is also a place they
can go for instructor assistance after the face to face workshop. The second assessment is a
course evaluation in which students can indicate areas where they need further support with
Google Classroom.
Gaining the attention of learners: Students will be engaged throughout the learning
segment by watching actual videos of how a Google Classroom is created and utilized. They
Inform the learners of the objectives: Before the students begin the lesson, they will view
Activate relevant prior knowledge: I will remind the students of the apps that they
Deliver content to learners: All content will be delivered through G-Suite for Education.
Links and instructional materials will be uploaded to the Classroom for student use.
A formative evaluation plan will be in place to assess the content appropriateness and
accuracy, completeness, and usability and appeal of my instruction. The evaluation will include
