Google Classroom Professional Development Grant Proposal

FRIT 7232 Visionary Leadership in Instructional Technology

Spring 2019

Tamara Ballard

Keisha Wright
Abstract

Leavelle McCampbell Middle School is seeking a grant to provide Google Classroom training

for sixth through eighth grade certified teachers. The goal of this grant proposal is to ensure

teachers have the knowledge to effectively utilize Google Classroom to prepare and engage

students in 21st Century learning. Also, to make sure all instructional staff are proficient in using

technology as a learning tool to drive lessons. Online activities and hands-on training will be

provided by a Certified Google Trainer during the 2019-2020 pre-planning to prepare teachers

with the skills to implement Google Classroom with maximum effectiveness. The goal is that by

the end of the training, teachers will be able to create lessons, assessments, discussion posts, and

upload links and resources through Google Classroom to increase student collaboration,

independent practice, and engagement in a 21st Century classroom in an online setting.

Demonstrated Need

Many teachers at Leavelle McCampbell are not utilizing 21st century technology in the

classroom to engage students. In the spring of 2019, teachers at Leavelle McCampbell Middle

School completed the Planning a Future Technology Professional Development Training Survey

(see Appendix A) for the 2019-2020 upcoming school year. For the purpose of this grant, data

was collected for instructional needs, improvement, and planning. Teachers were emailed a

survey to gain information relating specifically to Google Classroom professional development

opportunities. The data produced from the survey stated that 90% of teachers have never used a

web 2.0 technology tool to engage students, while 30% have never heard of Google Classroom.

The survey shows that 10% of the teachers who participated in the survey have used Google

Classroom as a teaching tool for an engaging lesson or as a formative assessment, while 90%
have not. The survey shows 90% of the participants would like to learn about the different

features on Google Classroom in a professional development training. The data shows 70% of

the teachers had little to no knowledge on Google Classroom and would like to learn more about

the features in order to take their classes to the next level of online learning. The analysis of the

survey revealed an immediate need for professional development and support to utilize the

features on Google Classroom to increase teacher confidence concerning the use of technology at

Leavelle McCampbell Middle School.

Plan of Operation

Based on the Planning a Future Technology Professional Development Training Survey,

teachers at Leavelle McCampbell Middle School demonstrated an immediate need of training for

the implementation of Google Classroom. Professional Development training will take place two

days during pre-planning for the 2019-2020 school year in the Media Center at Leavelle

McCampbell Middle School. Face-to-face training with a Certified Google Trainer will take

place August 12-13, 2019 to allow teachers time to practice using Google Classroom to ensure

that all goals and objectives have been covered. All instructional staff members will be required

to attend the training that will contain collaborative learning experiences, hands-on learning, and

promote an active-learning environment by allowing educators to practice using the model

Google Classroom created by the Certified Google Trainer. Instructional staff will be required to

bring their school laptops to use throughout the training.

The outcome for this training is to give educators a chance to set up their own Google

Classroom for the 2019-2020 school year. On the last day of training, the Certified Google

Trainer will open the floor for questions, and close the training session with a post-training

survey. The Certified Google Trainer will provide teachers with resourceful websites to help

them maintain their knowledge using Google Classroom as an instructional tool throughout the

2019-2020 school year.

Evaluation Plan

Based on the data from The Planning a Future Technology Professional Development

Training Survey ( see Appendix A), Goal 1 was created to ensure all instructional staff have the

knowledge to set up Google Classroom to prepare and engage students in 21st Century learning

during the pre-planning training. On the first day of training, teachers took The Google

Classroom Pre-Assessment Survey (see Appendix B) to provide the Certified Google Trainer

data on how knowledgeable Leavelle McCampbell Middle School teachers were with using

Google Classroom and where they stood in relation to the goal 2.

Instructional staff completed The Google Classroom Post-Assessment Survey (s ee

Appendix D) at the end of the training on day 2. The data determined if they would be ready to

independently create and navigate Google Classroom during the 2019-2020 school year. Goals 3

and 4 was established to provide ongoing support and help answer questions through online

resources and Google For Education Help Forums from t he Certified Google Trainer provided

on day 2. By the end of the year, instructional staff would have all subjects and/or class periods,

multiple assignments, assessments, attached links, and uploaded resources using Google

Classroom as an online learning tool in order to ensure that Leavelle McCampbell Middle School

would be a 21st century, highly-skilled campus.

Budget

The proposed budget for the service of a Google Classroom Training is $3,000.00. This

amount will go towards paying the Certified Google Trainer for a two day training session for
thirty-eight certified teachers across all content areas. Training will be held during pre-planning,

for Aiken County Public School System therefore teachers would be paid and substitutes would

not be needed. The PTO (Parent Teacher Organization) of Leavelle McCampbell Middle School

will donate light refreshments both days for the teachers and trainer.
