Formulation: transmit/receive diversity, array gain

• Basic assumption: noise is uncorrelated among antennas,

• Receive diversity only: SIMO system (fixed channel):

• Maximum ratio combining (MRC):

• For MRC, channel estimate is required at the receiver,

• Combined noise has power

• SNR after combining becomes

• SNR gain equals

• This is commonly called array gain. For two antennas, SNR is on average 3 dB larger than in single antenna case.
