Procedure:
Part one
Determining the Internal resistance of a cell
1. Connect the circuit as shown in the Figure 1.
2. Keep the switch turned off. Take the reading of the voltmeter. This is the initial
electromotive force (e.m.f.) of the cell.
3. Set the rheostat to zero. Turn on the switch and take the ammeter and voltmeter
readings. Turn off the switch once the readings are taken.
4. Increase the resistance of the rheostat. Turn on the switch and adjust the rheostat
until the current is roughly 0.1 A below the value in (3). Take the ammeter and
voltmeter readings. Remember to turn off the switch once the readings are taken.
5. Repeat step 4 by decreasing the current in steps of 0.1 A.
6. Plot a graph of the voltage V against the current I.
7. Determine from the graph the internal resistance r of the source and ε.

Part two
Determining the internal resistance of a voltmeter
1. Set the voltage of the source (Vs) at exactly 10.0 V using the multimeter.

2. Select a 1MΩ resistor and verify its value using the color code.

=10*100kΩ+-5%=1MΩ

3. Assemble the circuit shown in Figure 2 below.

4. Record the voltage measured by the multimeter (Vm)

Vm=9.98

5. Calculate the current in the circuit using the following equation:

I = (Vs - Vm)/R
I =(10-9.98 )/1M
=0.02/(1*106 )
=0.02*10-6 A
2) Determine the internal resistance (R) of the multimeter using the following
equation Rm = Vm/I

Rm=9.98/0.02*10-6

=499*106Ω
