Task 2: Reflecting on TP experience

Teachers need to be prepared to face the sudden incidents that might affect the
implementation of the curriculum, just like what we are facing nowadays. Because of
the virus that spread over the world, we are forced to complete our teaching and
learning online. However, education major in the higher colleges of technology
provides a valuable opportunity for us to practice the online teaching to develop our
skills to engage the students in meaningful, social and contextual education.

To develop these skills, we supposed to attend the online classes with our Monitor
School Teachers to investigate online learning and the implemented strategies. Then,
we get that chance to practice the online teaching with them. Unfortunately, the
school that I practiced my teaching in in this semester did not give the permission to
go through this experience regarding to the MOE and school policy. But, I had the
opportunity to practice the online teaching with my Monitor College Teacher and
colleagues. Based on my experiences and observations, my colleagues and I found the
same issues and difficulties with the online implementation of the curriculum.

Firstly, the online learning required more self-discipline by students and we did not
have the opportunity to know that all students were engaged. We were not able to
monitor the students as usual in the classroom to ensure that they were involved in the
learning process. Second, it was easier for students to cheat while performing the
assessments using Google or even asking someone for help. Thirdly, online learning
led to isolation, since students did not have the chance to work with others
cooperatively. Nevertheless, it was a good experience to go through. Online teaching
took less time; we had to teach students for only 30 minutes unlike the normal lessons
in the classroom, which take 45 minutes.

Additionally, it encouraged the independent learning because it is more students-

centered. Students needed to work individually and independently while performing
the activities and tasks. However, I prefer the traditional way of teaching and learning,
which is in the classroom because it is more effective in delivering the curriculum and
students get the opportunity to develop their diverse skills in various fields.
