Reflective Insight on

Maternal and Child Nursing Abnormals

This semester I have enjoyed the class of Maternal and Child

Nursing Abnormals Lecture and it made me realize that I have a lot of
medical terms and things that I do not know and I need to know. This
subject has been very helpful for me to really analyze the
abnormalities of pregnancy, there is a lot to absorb. I am happy
because I am able to learn new things these new learning’s that I have
acquired will be applied in the clinical area.

I will encourage my pregnant patients to attend their maternal

check ups to monitor their health and their baby’s health and growth
to prevent further complications and sickness. Also, I will discuss the
importance of being compliant to the check ups and medications given
to them. With the help of this subject I can now explain the rationale of
being compliant to the care that they need.

The quizzes helped me to really test my understanding in the

topics, the way of teaching of our instructor is effective and have really
helped me to gain the knowledge that I have now. I learned several
things about my study habit during this semester writing while the
discussion Is on going is really effective to me because I am able to
understand what I am writing and my memorization skills are good at
this time.

In the MCN Laboratory We were also given some checklists for

different skills even if we will not perform it as a return demonstration
so that we will learn a new skill on our own and it will serve as a future
reference. Also, we had a revalida for this subject and we applied the
skills that e learned. We learned to have a proper time management
and teamwork.

During the Revalida I was feeling really nervous and at the same
time I believe in what we learned in the Return Demo all we have to
this apply it in a scene spontaneously but when we were inside the
Room and about to start the revalida we lacked in communication and
I learned that communication is a very important factor because
without this we won’t make it.

In the MCN Skills Lecture, I can say that this part really helped me
to understand better because we started learning the anatomy of a
system first before we go directly to what it is about to do in the body
of the mother or in the baby. I think learning or re-capping the
anatomy is much better because I can understand how it occurs and
what specific body parts, hormones and nerves is under that.

I am very glad to have our clinical instructors for supporting and

guiding us through this beginning of our journey as a student nurses.
This subject really help us a lot, the knowledge that we learned are
now the one we applying on our hospital duties. Now our role as a
nurse is to reinforce the importance of paying attention to the real
problem. We have to lead the way of those people who are suffering
from abnormalities in pregnancy, for example is that we have to
educate patient for them to manage their disease and to ensure the
prevention of spreading the disease. Health teaching will help them to
grasp the knowledge and managements.

ANEMIA
Anemia is a blood disorder. Blood is a vital liquid that your heart constantly
pumps through your veins and arteries and all throughout your body. When some-
thing goes wrong in your blood, it can affect your health and quality of life.

What Causes Anemia?

Anemia occurs if your body makes too few red blood cells (RBCs), destroys too many
RBCs, or loses too many RBCs. RBCs contain hemoglobin, a protein that carries
oxygen throughout your body. When you don’t have enough RBCs or the amount of
hemoglobin in your blood is low, your body doesn’t get all the oxygen it needs. As a
result, you may feel tired or have other symptoms.
Sign and Symptoms:
Tiredness or weakness l Pale or yellowish skin l Faintness or dizziness l Increased
thirst
Sweating
Weak and rapid pulse, rapid breathing l Shortness of breath
Lower leg cramp
Heart-related symptoms (abnormal heart rhythms, heart murmur, enlarged heart,
heart failure

SEXUALLY TRANSMITTED INFECTION

are infections you can get by having sex with someone who has an infection.
These infections are usually passed from person to person through vaginal
intercourse.
They can also be passed through anal sex, oral sex, or skin-to-skin contact. STIs
can be caused by viruses or bacteria. STIs caused by viruses include hepatitis B,
herpes, HIV, and the human papilloma virus (HPV). STIs caused by bacteria include
chlamydia, gonorrhea, and syphilis.
SIGN AND SYMPTOMS:
 Itching around the vagina and/or  A scaly rash on the palms of your
discharge from the vagina for hands and the soles of your feet.
women.  Dark urine, loose, light-colored
 Discharge from the penis for men. stools, and yellow eyes and skin.
 Pain during sex or when urinating.  Small blisters that turn into scabs
 Pain in the pelvic area. on the genital area.
 Sore throats in people who have  Swollen glands, fever, and body

 Chancre sores (painless red sores) loss.
on the genital area, anus, tongue,  Soft, flesh-colored warts around the
and/or throat. genital area.

TREATMENTS:
Antibiotics. Antibiotics, often in a single dose, can cure many sexually transmitted
bacterial and parasitic infections, including gonorrhea, syphilis, chlamydia and
trichomoniasis. Typically, you'll be treated for gonorrhea and chlamydia at the same
time because the two infections often appear together.

Antiviral drugs. If you have herpes or HIV, you'll be prescribed an antiviral drug.
You'll have fewer herpes recurrences if you take daily suppressive therapy with a
prescription antiviral drug. However, it's still possible to give your partner herpes.

URINARY TRACT INFECTION

is an infection in any part of your urinary system — your kidneys, ureters, bladder
and urethra. Most infections involve the lower urinary tract — the bladder and the
urethra.

SIGN AND SYMPTOMS:

Urinary tract infections don't always cause signs and symptoms, but when they do
they may include:
A strong, persistent urge to urinate
A burning sensation when urinating
Passing frequent, small amounts of urine
Urine that appears cloudy
Urine that appears red, bright pink or cola-colored — a sign of blood in the urine
Strong-smelling urine
Pelvic pain, in women — especially in the center of the pelvis and around the area of
the pubic bone

TREATMENTS:

Stay Hydrated- Water helps the urinary tract organs remove waste from the body
efficiently while retaining vital nutrients and electrolytes.
Urinate when the need arises – helps to flush out bacteria
Use Probiotics- can help keep the urinary tract healthy and free from harmful
bacteria.
Get enough vitamin C- Vitamin C is an antioxidant that helps to improve immune
system function.

The Treatment of Recurrent Spontaneous Miscarriage

(Reflection)

Recurrent spontaneous miscarriage is a diagnostic label used

when three or more consecutive miscarriages have occurred. It is also
known as habitual abortion, and can be emotionally devastating for
the women and couples affected. Traditional Chinese Medicine has
been used for treatment and not only to help prevent miscarriage, but
also help maintain a healthy pregnancy to give a baby the best
possible start of life.

Women who experience Recurrent spontaneous miscarriage is a

diagnostic label used when three or more consecutive miscarriages
are advised to receive Traditional Chinese Medicine treatment three
months prior to conception and during the first trimester of
pregnancy. There are traditionally four Traditional Chinese Medicine
patterns relating to miscarriage the Deficiency of qi and blood, Kidney
deficiency,
Blood heat and Trauma.

The Traditional Chinese Medicine focuses on determining the

underlying cause of the Recurrent spontaneous miscarriage. It is
sometimes necessary to combine Traditional Chinese Medicine with
modern Biomedical treatment to achieve the best possible result.
However, when treating women who are undergoing IVF, ICSI or lUI,
exercise caution with the use of Chinese herbs, unless it is known
exactly how they will interact with the prescribed drugs.
