Exercise 1:

Evaluate the following primary tank design with respect to detention

time, overflow rate and weir loading. Design data were given as,

Flow = 0.150 m3/s

Influent SS = 280 mg/L
Sludge concentration = 6.0%
Efficiency = 60%
Length = 40.0 m
Width = 10.0 m
Liquid depth = 2.0 m
Weir length = 75.0 m

Detention time, t = V/Q = (40 x 10 x 2)/0.15

= 5333.33 s

= 1.48 hr

Overflow rate, vo = Q/A = 0.15/40 x 10

= 0.000375 m3/m2.s

= 32.4 m3/m2.day

Weir loading = Q/weir length

= 0.15/75

= 0.002 m3/m.s

= 172.8 m3/m.day
Exercise 2:

A 108 MLD water treatment plant has six rectangular sedimentation

tanks. Calculate the length and width of each tank if the overflow rate is
20 m3/m2.day. Determine the retention time of each tank. Assume a
length to width ratio of 4:1 and a water depth of 3.0 m. If the weir
length of each tank is 75 m, what is the weir loading?

Q into each tank 108/6 = 18 MLD = 18000m3/day

V0 = Q/As → As = Q/v0

= 18000/20

= 900 m2

4x

4x2 = 900 → x = 15
Length = 60 m
Width = 15 m

vo = H/t → t = H/v0

= (3 x 24)/20

= 3.6 hours
Weir loading = Q/weir length

= 18000/75

= 240 m3/m.day
